I haven’t seen it and won’t see it so I can’t give an opinion. But it sure looks and sounds disgusting. And before even clicking on the thread I knew Jay Are would be here defending it.

My take from reading a few articles and watching a couple of clips is that the movie tries to address the issue of hyper sexualization of young girls by hyper sexualizing young girls. The clip I saw was pretty gross and made me feel like I needed to wash my eyes out with bleach.

It’s like if I was against setting puppies on fire (I am) and made a movie where I set a puppy on fire to show you how bad it is. Horrible story telling if you can’t convey your message without showing it so explicitly.

Interesting that the same media that told us that Joker would cause mass shootings and no one should go see it are begging us to go see this movie because of the “nuance”. GTFO.

basically what i was arguing on the previous page

it would be like if requiem for a dream skipped the 2nd half and just ran with the first part when herion made everything great and life was grand. then it ended. would that really be an indictment of using heroin?

Most attention this board has ever given to a French-language movie. Considering no one is actually going to watch it, and no one knows what's actually in it (I don't count scanning for 5 minutes as watching it), kinda weird how many wanna keep talking about it

I don't know nuffin' about it. Ima not gonna watch it tho.

i don’t think that’s a fair comparison - caveat that i haven’t seen the film - BUT I believe that the dance routine circulating that I saw was cut short. Apparently as the dance went on (and got worse) the crowd started to react with more shock, the main girl stops the act and leaves the stage in tears. The film ends with her wearing a very modest outfit and jumping rope.

I think overall the film has a good message but at the same time the visuals they use to deliver the message end up stepping all over the message.

ETA: How would Cuties compare to a movie like Kids? 11 year olds over sexualized in society and on screen vs 15-16 year olds engaging in overt sexual acts and drug use? Both movies had actors that were actually the same age as the characters they were portraying. 16 is obviously way different than 11 but full on overt sexual activity is also way different than suggestive dancing. BIG uproar around Kids back in the day.

As a thought exercise are these movies comparable just in a different generation facing different issues (HIV vs social media and over sexualizing young girls)?

Yikes.

Seriously, that's a twisted statement on our society if we feel that filming and watching 11 yr olds rubbing on their hoo-has is acceptable.

Sadly, the over sexualization of younger girls has been a thing for awhile. Could I see a middle school dance team dancing like that to that extreme? Probably not. But I could see them doing it with something more toned down but still sexualized. And weirdly, people seem to be ok with that.

And don't even get me started on the incredibly weird pageant circuit for young girls. That shite is as uncomfortable as the clip you posted if we're being really honest about it.

The same people defending cuties will be the people complaining in three months about Baby It’s Cold outside.

That should not be a thing. It should've ended with the sad demise of Jon Bennett Ramsey.

The clips they showed of those pageants in the documentary on her murder were shocking...who knew this existed?

It would be one thing if the judges were the parents. But the judges were just these random fat middle-aged dudes who looked creepy as frick. I mean with the Church scandals, the Boy Scouts, how could these parents not connect the dots?

If you wanna watch a non pedo version of this movie, made 40 years ago, staring a young Jodie Foster, rent FOXES.

It probably hasn't aged very well, but it does have young teenagers who dabble in drugs, sex and even older men. A beautiful 'coming of age ' movie.

Or you could try Little Darlings, with a young Tatum O'Neil, Kristy McNichol, in yes, another 'coming of age ' movie.

Cuties isn't anything new, save for they've dropped the ages of the stars a few years.

Need to throw a NSFW on that link.

I saw Foxes as a kid on VHS - so maybe I was too unaware of exploitation but it seemed more tame which came later...the movie Kids.

Plus, those two movies you mentioned don't seem to be in the same boat - they were older actors playing rebellious teenagers...it's been done a million times. They weren't children twerking for creepos.

Jodie Foster was 18 years old in that movie. (Foxes)

Kristy McNichol was 18 years old. (Little Darlings)

Those movies were about portraying teenagers with adult actors.

This is about children. There's no comparison.

I made it to the 1:04 mark. My instinct was to bail a bit before, but being 'open minded' .... Hell no. IDK who it was made for, but as Brie Larson would say - " It wasn't made for me "

Cuties is unquestionably about sexually exploiting children.

While other movies have dealt with young prostitutes ( Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver, Brooke Shields in Pretty Baby ) this movie clearly is driven to normalize 11 yr olds twerking and engaging in provocative dance moves, as a part of 'coming of age ' for young girls.

Bitch, please. No one is buyin' it, and it's clear by the reaction it's getting.

I have to admit that Netflix's capitulation to the left makes it harder for me to resubscribe/rotate every few months like I've done for years. Is Cuties a brain-child of Netflix's paid influencers the Obama's? Now add HBO Max into the mix and I will definitely subscribe to them when they get on Roku platform. Only thing that will get me back to Netflix will be new season of Ozark. My two main rotations will now be HBO Max and Criterion Channel.

No it's a year old French film they just picked up the rights to stream.

Doesn't make it any less disgusting

HBO is likely both so relieved and a bit bummed that Cuties was released the same weekend as Unpregnant.
