I'm not going to say Wonder Woman should not have had a sequel, since the superhero genre is made for that. And Gal Gadot makes a nice heroine.

But it should not have been THAT movie (WW84).

The problem is it was a trilogy and the studios rushed it. Two, fine enough material for that, but not three. Like end the first film where Bard finds them and start off the second film at Laketown. The Battle of the Five Armies does not hold enough material to justify a movie.

That said, Jackson nailed every single scene he had to: The Unexpected Party, the Trolls, Riddles in the Dark, Mirkwood Spiders, Bilbo meeting Smaug, Smaug’s death, and Thorin’s death are masterfully done. He only had enough time to get the scenes he needed to get right right, so he deliberately halfassed the rest. Jackson is not to blame for the Hobbit, and there are great 4+ hours fan edits that are excellent.

Outstanding take.

I mention this from time to time, as I think it remains a relevant piece of information regarding movies and TV...

decades ago I read some book on the making of Star Trek, the original series. Was written long before there were any movies, spinoffs etc (other than the cartoon spinoff).

Someone, one of the writers or producers, stated that you have a fundamental difference between a movie (standalone) and a series (ongoing tale).

The best movies focus on the biggest event in the protagonist's life. Nothing was as big before, won't be as big afterwards.

Series should not have as epic a climax, because you have to continue onward and have further climaxes (no comments from the peanut gallery ).

This makes a sequel hard to do. First Die Hard was a pretty good movie, with some legit dramatic moments. John McClane happened to stumble into a terrorist plot; a great What If?
It loses any semblance of realism when it occurs again. McClane should have lived the remainder of his life in normalcy.

Marvel did an excellent job building up to Thanos and Infinity War, but that world got more and more removed from reality with every film. It seems realistic (to a point) up until Avengers, and at that point it diverges completely from our world afterwards.

On concept, a Conan the Barbarian sequel was a no-brainer.

On execution, it was a stinker compared to the original. The problem was that it was a different kind of movie. Less epic, less cinematic, cheaper. Less serious. Not so much bad as a bad copy.

frick that noise. Conan ripping that thing's horn off kicks arse.

There are precious few films out there that ever needed a sequel to begin with. Most are just money grabs and very few of them actually have a good story to tell.

The obvious answer no noe has mentioned is “a christmas story 2”. I didn’t know it existed until a few years ago.

You'd have a much shorter list if you asked "What movie sequels were worth a damn"?
