I would imagine Spock in The Wrath of Khan would be up there

I'd go with Ned Stark. Those who hadn't read the books (me at that time) had no idea it would actually happen, as we've been conditioned up to that point of central characters having plot armor.

I was genuinely shocked and upset.

Tony Stark, while newer and a "comic" book movie, was quite emotional. Then theres the obvious Maximus.

What defines greatest?

Heroic?
Gory?
Shocking?

As a kid, my first time seeing the Duke go down was gut wrenching.

I feel like Janet Leigh's shower death in Psycho is probably the greatest/most iconic.

Wow, this is exactly what I was going to post, but in the opposite order.

The thing about Tony Stark's death is it was predictable, IMO. We all knew RDJ was moving on, so killing him off was easy.

The question was not "what is the most surprising death in movie or TV history".

After the head fake in IW, I thought he was going to live and sort of just be an overseer type going forward. Retired but hey if the group needs some stark tech

Omar’s death on The Wire was pretty memorable.
