Obviously not a movie, but if you can include a series, Band of Brothers destroys anything else made, even with all of the Ambrose inaccuracies.

no one had ever seen the way Saving Private Ryan portrayed the d day invasion and the sheer horror it must have been for those landing that day
Saving Private Ryan is the most visceral depiction of WWII ever. I remember seeing in the theaters and realizing I hadn't moved a muscle during the entire last 75% of the D-Day scene.
Beyond that, it's hard to pick because there are so many sides to the war.
Possibly unpopular opinion...the opening drop scene in Overlord is actually a really good depiction of war in an otherwise meh movie.

Any WWII POW film fills that requirement for me. Bridge on the River Kai, The Great Escape, King Rat, Stalag 17, even Victory is on my rewatch list.
I also enjoy films that address the plight of a POW.
Checkout “The Railway Man” it has Colin Firth and is criminally underrated IMO.

I’ll add in The Pianist. Very good biopic.

*Yes, I have to ignore the American M48 tanks in place of Shermans and German Panzers

Lots of great ones already mentioned, surprised we are on page 4 and have not seen:
Kelly’s Heroes or
Memphis Belle

Go ahead and download but I think Fury has become one of my favorite WWII movies
Gets lots of points for having not only actual Shermans, including an Easy 8 (Fury), but an actual operable German Tiger I which is a first in a movie since WWII.
Otherwise it's a popcorn flick.

Thought there would be more love for Patton. Along with the incredible acting, it did a great job showing the scale of the war in my opinion.
Patton, SPR, and Band of Brothers are on a level above the rest.

I was just scrolling through to see if someone had listed Mister Roberts. Great movie.
Another pleasant WWII comedy was Father Goose with Cary Grant and Leslie Caron.
Not sure The Caine Mutiny has been mentioned. Classic courtroom drama set in the US Navy.

My personal favorite is probably Midway - the version made in 1976. Is it the best WWII movie? No... but it was among the first I ever saw and led to my deep fascination with that specific battle.
Yes

A Roman Catholic nun and a hard-bitten US Marine are stranded together on a Japanese-occupied island in the South Pacific during World War II. Under constant threat of discovery by a ruthless enemy, they hide in a cave and forage for food together. Their forced companionship and the struggle for survival forge a powerful emotional bond between them.

Cast Deborah Kerr as Sister Angela Robert Mitchum as Corporal Allison USMC.
Currently you are able to watch "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison" streaming on fuboTV. It is also possible to buy "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison" on Amazon Video, Google Play Movies, YouTube, Apple TV, Vudu, Microsoft Store as download or rent it on Amazon Video, Apple TV, Google Play Movies, YouTube, Vudu, Microsoft Store online.
Both Kerr and Mitchum are great in these roles.
I enjoyed the scenes of the Japanese troops in their barracks, gambling and drinking, just like American troops do in WW!! movies.

Absolutely. Very cool to see a working Tiger on the big screen.

Agree. The tactics used in the Tiger fight just piss me off. Fury had the 76 gun and could take that Tiger out on its own. As long as he shot first
