70s - Animal House
80s - Caddyshack
90s - Mallrats
2000s - Shaun of the Dead
2010s - What We Do in the Shadows
Hmmm I wrote that list like 10 times
American Pie was too close to the 2000s, like Airplane is too much of the 70s to represent the 80s. South Park is too hyper focused to represent the decade. I could take both Blazing Saddles and Dumb and Dumber in their respective decades. I think Mallrats is more encompassing than Clerks.
I'd want to put in one of Anchorman, Forgetting Sarah Marshall or 40 YO Virgin, but there's something about Shaun of the Dead that hit the decade. 2010s have been poor for comedies, but Shadows is phenomenal and it sort of skirts 2010s identity politics well enough.

None of those quotes are anywhere near the Dumb and Dumber quotes. Your quotes prove it’s quite inferior to Dumb and Dumber. Here’s another quote:
“You’ll have to excuse my friend. He’s a little slow. The town’s back that way.”
Way funnier and can be used in more contexts than anything you listed.

Not “mainstream” enough

"Grizzly Adams *did* have a beard."
"You can trouble me for a warm glass of shut-the-hell-up! Now, you will go to sleep! Or I will PUT you to sleep. Check out the name tag. You're in MY world now, grandma!"
Dumb and Dumber is childish spittle. There, I said it.

Mainstream?
70s Blazing Saddles
80s Ghostbusters
90s Dumb and Dumber
2000s Anchorman
70s Blazing Saddles
80s Ghostbusters
90s Dumb and Dumber
2000s Anchorman

Nowhere close to Dumb and Dumber quotes. Seriously, just check out this board to know which one is quoted more. Maybe among your friends HG is quoted more, but by no means by the general population.

I'll give you this at least. “So you’re telling me there’s a chance” could probably stack up to the entire Happy Gilmore quote stable as far as most used. And yes, my friends and I quote Happy Gilmore a lot.

I don't know a single person who references Billy Madison, other than to say it sucks. Hell, Joe Dirt is held in much higher regard than that. Dumb & Dumber is probably the defining 90s comedy.

I feel you still have more words within you to express your disdain for Adam Sandler movies. Don't stop typing while the words are still flowing.

I would have Wedding Crashers and Forgetting Sarah Marshall well over 40 Year Old Virgin for the 2000s

Coming to America deserves to be in the 1980s discussion

70s - Animal House
80s - Caddyshack
90s - Office Space
2000s-
2010s -
I can’t decide on the last two decades. I am split between The Hangover, Wedding Crashers and Step Brothers for 2000. No clue on 2010s yet.

This is actually a good call too.

2000 is really tough. A lot of good movies there but Old school might take it
Regarding billy Madison vs dumb and dumber.
Dumb and dumber is in my top 3 favorite movies of all time. So it obviously wins but to say billy Madison isn’t good or doesn’t stand the test of time is way off base. They are both great movies and very quotable.

"What a lovely accent you have.....New Jersey"?
"You'll have to excuse my friend....he's a little slow. The town is that way".
"Excuse me, Flo".
"What'e the soup du jour?...It's the soup of the day....mmmm, sounds good. I'll have that."

1970 MASH Barely made the 70s, released in January

I wouldn't argue with most of the choices listed in this thread but it's a bit subjective so I'll give you my choice for the defining film and then my favorite comedy:
70s Defining: either M*A*S*H or American Graffiti.
My fav: Little Big Man
80s Defining: either Fast Times at Ridgemont High or Ferris Bueller's Day Off
My Fav: either A Christmas Story or Midnight Run
90s Defining: Home Alone or Groundhog Day
My fav: Tough choice between Dutch, My Cousin Vinny, and Grumpy Old Men but I think Fargo stands out among the pack as the best.
2000s Defining: bad decade for comedies, maybe Talladega Nights?
My fav: probably Just Friends but it's slim pickins
