The 40 Year Old Virgin thread got me thinking.

Now these aren’t personal favorites, but an ubiased observation (although I love all these movies). The best I can come up with is...

70s - Blazing Saddles
80s - Caddyshack
90s - Billy Madison
2000s - 40 YO Virgin
2010s - ?

80s is tough.

Caddyshack is great. So is Vacation. And the ever underrated Porky’s.

90s has to be dumb and dumber. Easily over Billy Madison.

American Pie while being a 1999 movie set the bar for the 2000s

That is not the 90s definitive comedy. If it is, that’s an insult to the decade. Dazed and Confused, Dumb and Dumber, Groundhog Day, The Big Lebowski, There’s Something About Mary, Office Space, and When Harry Met Sally are all far superior to that mediocrity. Simply asinine to say that Billy Madison was the greatest comedy of the 90s.

80s is very tough. I’d throw in Uncle Buck too.

I never get tired of John Hughes movies.

Save for the “pieces of shite for breakfast” quote, Happy Gilmore isn’t on the same level as Dumb and Dumber. Dumb and Dumber is infinitely quotable for many different scenarios. Adam Sandler’s movies aren’t that good and don’t stand the test of time. Dumb and Dumber does.

As for me:

70s: Blazing Saddles/Young Frankenstein
80s: Airplane
90s: The Big Lebowski
00s: Superbad
10s: The World’s End

Meh, I would wager HG gets quoted more than D&D on a daily bases.

Definitely a top 5 movie of the decade and a personal fave, but I wouldn’t classify it as a pure comedy.

All good, but more people reference Billy Madison more than these.

Again, it’s not a personal ranking. I guarantee
Billy Madison is more relevant in pop culture than Harry and fricking Sally.

The fact that the best meme you can use to say I’m wrong is this proves the point.

Then you’re delusional.

“We landed on the Moon!”

“So you’re telling me there’s a chance.”

“We’ve got no food. We’ve got no jobs. Our pets heads are falling off!”

“Big Gulps huh? Well see you later!”

“I don’t know Lloyd, the French are assholes.”

“Boy, this party really died.”

“That John Denver’s full of shite, man.”

“That’s as good as money, sir. Those are I.O.U.s.”

“Just when I think you couldn’t possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this… and totally redeem yourself!”

Happy Gilmore isn’t even close.

Billy Madison is more meme worthy than “When Harry Met Sally”, but it’s not a better comedy. Anyone who says Billy Madison is more meme worthy than Dumb and Dumber is simply delusional.

I love Happy Gilmore and deserves more credit than you’re giving, but I agree Dumb and Dumber is tops. Easily ahead of Billy Madison as well

Old School and Wedding Crashers are in the argument for the 2000s

"uh oh happy learned how to putt"

"And you can count on me, waiting for you in the parking lot!"

"It's all in the hips"

"Tap in, just tap in"

"Somebody's closer!"

" Your fingers hurt? Well now your backs gonna hurt, cause you just pulled landscaping duty."

"You're gonna die clown!"

"Hey, why don't I just go eat some hay, make things out of clay, lay by the bay? I just may! What'd ya say?"
