Were people in 1999 really surprised by the ending of The Sixth Sense?

I just watched it for the first time in 20 years. Clues everywhere. I remember telling my brother-in-law in the theater when I first saw it, “Bruce Willis is dead.”
People are dum.

IMO it's the greatest twist of all time.
It was right there in front of our eyes the entire time.

Only two movies I figured out a big twist early in the movie were Angel Heart (1987) and The Two Jakes (1990) Nobody was impressed. The girl I saw The Two Jakes with hadn't seen Chinatown. She told me she bet everyone who saw Chinatown went into it thinking it was who it was.
She must have had the internet before I got it or something..

It’s made more sense that his wife didn’t talk to him than him being dead. Let that sink in about marriage

OP I’m sure is not telling some lies.
I myself knew these three things in the first minutes of movies:
Vader was Luke’s father.
It was Barzini all along.
The Trex would kill the velociraptor.
