I wonder if they will share the revelation at the end that both houses are responsible and their hatred for each other cost them their beloved children and reconcile their differences.

First, this actress is 23 years old.
Juliet is not even 14-years old in the play.
Second, there were Moors in Italy at the time so, okay, no big deal...but that was Southern Italy.

Timeless tales can be retold without having to literally race and gender swap... or APPROPRIATE existing characters.
But current day Hollywood and Broadway are going to current day us whether we want it or not.

He's pointing out that in Shakespeare's time they didn't use female actors but rather pre-pubescent boys or guys with high voices to play all of the female parts.
And this story has been changed a dozen times - West Side Story, etc. - as have most of Shakespeare's works.

She's supposed to be like a young Helen of Troy...that's part (a huge part) of the narrative and accounts for Romeo's instant overwhelming attraction and subsequent behavior.
I mean casting Juliet, the audience has to buy into it. Why not just throw Al Bundy up there to play Achilles... He scored 4 TDs in a high school football game once upon a time, I'm sure he can act the part.

And in Leo and Claire Dane’s Romeo + Juliet (which was wildly popular in the late 90s) Mercutio was Black and the Capulets were Hispanic.

Well, it's about time those unsung millions of Renaissance-era black Italians finally get their due representation. How they have been so completely erased from history after their multitude of important scientific and artistic contributions is a travesty.
