Caught each one opening day in the theater.

I also read it yearly and had no issue with the changes (other than the omission of Scouring of the Shire)

What are some of the changes you find cringey?

There were many changes from book to film, some necessary in my opinion. I’m curious for your examples of cringe.

Diversity quotas alone make it near impossible to ever have works of art like LOTR anymore. We can’t get decent casting anymore.

As for the Hobbit, just watch the Sméagol scene and Smaug scene

Everything else is arse

They aren't as terrible as everyone makes them out to be to sound edgy, but they aren't great.

Watch the The Hobbit animated movie instead. It's fantastic.

Glad I'm not growing up in these shitty times.

I wouldn’t if I were you.

Though there are parts which are masterfully done, I admit.

The original 3 LOTR movies each covered one moderately long book.

The Hobbit trilogy was based on just one short book.

This difference is why the LOTR flies and the Hobbit drags.

But

Just because The Hobbit is not as good as the best trilogy of all time doesn’t mean it’s bad.

The Hobbit Trilogy is a really good 3 hour movie shoved into a 8 hour trilogy. Like someone said before, if you can find a good 3 hour fan cut of it, that's probably the best way to watch it.

That being said, without years of build up and hype and waiting a year between each installment only for them to be kinda "meh", it may not be so bad for the first watch.

Lord of the Rings is like Gone with the Wind or Lawrence of Arabia though. You’re doomed to fail and there’s no way you can top it. Maybe as an animated miniseries, but that’s it. I don’t think it will be remade anytime soon unless Amazon decides to intentionally bastardize it.

Yeah, I’ll never forget watching them in the theaters. I had read the Hobbit before watching LotR, but I thought it was a single book (well it was) and not a trilogy. I was wondering how the hell they were going to wrap this up three hours into it and just thought Mount Doom had to be across the river that Frodo and Sam cross at the end, and then when I saw that they were still 300 miles away from Mordor and then it just ends, I was initially pissed before realizing it was a series. Became obsessed ever since.

LotR is the best fantasy ever produced... It is also hard to watch if you read the books at least once a year. So many cringe changes. Peter Jackson is a cornball.

The only change I have a major problem with is the removal of the Scouring of the Shire, even if I completely understand why it had to be removed and I think they would have shot it had they known how successful the Extended Editions would be.

There is one change from the books that I prefer, and it’s the destruction of the Ring. I find it cheesy how in the books Gollum simply slips, but in the films the Ring is undone by its own evil. I think that’s a more poetic way for the destruction of the Ring.

Watch the first 20 minutes of the hobbit, then fast forward to riddles in the dark, then fast forward to Bilbo meeting Smog, and then stop. Just read the book again for the gaps.

Smaug and Thorin’s deaths are well done too.

I mean, this is a thread for someone who has never seen them. So you’re spoiling some pretty severe shite with that post. What a severely assholish thing to do.

But I suppose that’s your MO here when you’ve seen or read something and others haven’t.

Appreciate all of the responses to this thread. The ONLY CGI that took me out briefly (and it’s not a knock, it was still new tech when these movies were made) is the background when the ring wraiths are riding their fellbeasts. Outside of that, I’ve been loving the hell out of these movies. They are so damn good

Not even close.

Lord of the Rings was largely filmed all over New Zealand. Much of the Hobbit was filmed on a green screen in Wellington.
