Some are just good shoot-em-ups, some are funny as well, but Pale Rider is more of a drama. It's my favorite western of his.
ETA: you might want to watch High Plains Drifter before, though, to get an appreciation of how he fine-tuned his craft over time. Dude knows how to use shadows on film to great effect.

Edit: Unforgiven was the first and only Eastwood western I have ever seen
It's sort of funny that the "Western to end Westerns" (genre) is the first Eastwood western you watched.
Sort difficult to backpedal and forget the ambiguity of black hat/white hat in Unforgiven.
(BTW, Unforgiven didn't obviously end Westerns; it just ended how we viewed them.)

People keep throwing titles out, but honestly isn't the real answer "all of them?"

Unforgiven, while being great, is the most overrated western of all time.
Should I start the downvotes myself?

I envy the OP on this. Discovering the Man With No Name has to be one of the true joys of film viewing. This is one of the most iconic characters ever.

I agree with this. Very underrated, IMO.
Unforgiven is GOAT. My favorite classic is High Plains Drifter, but not by much over the Sergio Leone trilogy.

I definitely envy the OP. I wish I could discover the Eastwood westerns again for the first time.

I think Pale Rider and Unforgiven are good movies that benefit from the legend of earlier movies.
If you don't have the Sergio Leone series and High Plains Drifter already in your subconscious, then the movies are interesting. But if you DO, then you are waiting for the moment THAT character emerges.
Unforgiven especially does that for me. Clint spends a lot of time talking and denying, he's old and not that guy anymore. He's trying to be a better person. But finally, he surrenders and becomes THAT again.

It’s a shame you started there because part of what makes Unforgiven so awesome is the weight of Clint’s western filmography. Still a great movie regardless.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
It set the standard for Westerns for a long time and originated a lot of things we take for granted from the genre today.

My favorite western of all time is outlaw josey wales.
My second favorite western is a willie nelson/Gary busey movie called barbarossa.
Barbarossa is really one of the best westerns ever made. It's up there with anything Clint Eastwood has made.

When the prostitute is telling him what happened to Ned, and he's steadily taking longer and longer pulls of the whiskey, you just know Lil Bill is totally fricked.

Open Range with Costner and Duvall is pretty epic, too. Pretty damn brutal.
