I was about to say… the need for international box office numbers killed most comedies unless there’s a lot of slapstick.
Which just shows how dumb some of the execs can be. A good comedy would have a 10th the budget of an action movie and can make bank domestically.
I miss the screwball, joke every second comedies like Airplane!

Most of the great comedies would be slammed as sexist, misogynist, racist, homophobic or some sort of cultural appropriation today.
No they would stop with your culture war bullshite. Plenty of really good comedies exist just aren’t as popular as they used to be.

Numerous comedians have commented at length about the difficulty of comedy in this era.
Just the ones that suck now and are out of new material. They’re washed up so instead of trying to be creative they just become a giant cliche of old man yells at clouds

country has lost its sense of humor and that appears to be getting more rather than less pronounced with successive generations.
Please, I’ve seen more older generations get offended at shite like South Park and Family Guy than some Twitter warrior get upset over a joke

Pre-2000 there was not a need to shoehorn a female character into everything.

“Go find a good/big hit theatrical comedy made after about 2014. You basically can't.“
I think Barbie did okay.

If this makes the list of top comedies in any era, that era is shite.

That statement is funnier than 99% of them.

You mean the ones big enough to escape the never ending threats of boycotts and lawsuits? I'd hardly call that washed up. The rest are about as funny as your "really good comedies" out there.

Did they organize boycotts, try and attack the creators on stage, threaten constant litigation or bully corporate sponsors in mass to pull money? They're still on the air, so that answers that question. There's a difference between being offended and fanatic activism.

Jim Carrey had a wild run and Sandler was putting out solid stuff into the early 2000s (Big Daddy, Anger Management, Mr Deeds)

Was the early 2000s comedies the golden era of comedy movies?
The Whole Nine Yards
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Zoolander
Shaun of the Dead
Joe Dirt
Hot Fuzz
Superbad
Orange County
Grandma's Boy
Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle

There’s so many quotable scenes from White Chicks that can make me giggle at any time

Every genre was better in the 80s, not just comedies.

Not Another Teen Movie is the pinnacle of comedy

“golden age” is a bit much I’d say.

Most of those were late 2000s. Shite, The Hangover was like 2009

No mention of Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Shame.

Was Barbie supposed to be overly funny? It hit big on nostalgia and hating the patriarchy or whatever but I don’t think even its biggest fans were belly laughing at it.

Yeah, good point.
Chasing the Asian market meant CGI, universal pure fantasy action.
They aren't getting American references in comedy unless as you said it's visceral slapstick like Jackie Chan's Drunken Master.

It's probably why so many comedy references in Marvel movies reference the biggest pop culture, OR are very general. Anything more subtle would rely on those cultural experiences unique to each culture - but most cultures probably know who Spongebob is.
Weird which things get popular.

Hollywood writers are predominately liberal and liberals are miserable people with no sense of humor. Throw in all the SJW shite, and you can't make a good comedy without getting cancelled.
