Irritated me to no end how they tried to give the person who catfished him a sympathetic angle. Doesn’t surprise me though. That fricking idiot (the catfish) said he hoped that his story would “be a light to other people who are trans”.

Like, mother fricker, you are a psychopath who says “I feel bad for what I did” but don’t really mean it. That sick frick doesn’t care and doesn’t see that he’s insane.

Te’o comes off as a genuinely good dude. Just an idiot
I thought it was bad for trans even though they tried to paint him in a better light than he deserved. Just shows how trans people are always mentally ill which drives them to become trans. Dr Phil described him as immature, naive and dissociated from reality.

Eta it didn’t seem like Teo was in on it at all. He came off as a decent human being from a good family.

Very uncomfortable watch. ESPN almost won him the Heisman with their coverage

Teo is obviously a good dude and JFF is obviously a shite head, but as an Aggie fan, all the over the top coverage about his girlfriend dying (who he never actually met) really pissed me off during the Heisman race.

Where do the "he was gullible" people derive their conclusions?

Hindsight is 20/20 for everyone.

The “wow he was so gullible” crowd are the same ones who believe in the sky man because something was written on pieces of paper thousands of years ago and that’s what they were told as a kid.

It’s almost human nature to look past logic in order to believe what we want to believe and what makes us feel good as people. It’s easy to say people are dumb for believing something, after the fact, when it wasn’t their experience.

My takeaway too. The angle is clearly "this was a poor woman trapped in a man's body who did these evil deeds over and over again but that's OK because she was true to herself."

All I saw was a mentally ill psychopath who did mentally ill things and continues to further display mental illness by thinking he's a woman.

Is there any doubt that it was the tranny that tipped off deadspin? He just decided to come back to life at the absolute peak of Man’ti’s college career. Straight narcissist

Agreed.

The catfish freak is a true narcissist.

Te’o was a lonely guy focused on football who got played.

I can’t believe he didn’t sue the catfish for damages from losing his 1st round draft pick.

It was a good documentary, but WAY too kind to the catfish.

The biggest red flag for me is that Tuiasosopo is described as a "family friend" of Teo.

You clearly haven’t watched the doc.

He had friended Teo’s cousin previously and was an internet “friend” with him.

This story didn't interest me the first time. He got catfished, so what?

Same here. It was a weird story and humiliating for him. But a guy got catfished. What else is there to know? Hardly seems worthy of a documentary. There has to be more interesting and unknown stories out there waiting to be told.

This doc was way better than I thought it would be.

I am glad he told his story. I believe he deserves the money from it as well. I have more respect for him after watching it.

I think this doc did a great job clearing up a lot of skepticism. I always had some skepticism surrounding him.

It was a really huge story. People oblivious to sports vaguely know some of the story, but they still have it wrong. If it's important to him to clear those doubts then I think it's great he made this. This doc kept my full attention which is hard to do. I can't believe the person actually tried to come back too.

That is the one thing I thought as well. It almost tries to make you feel sorry for them, because... trans.

The trans tried to act sorry about it, but then said they hope their story helps other trans. They made it all about "them" again. Did not seem genuinely sorry.

What they did and then continued to do was completely messed up. It just got worse. They shouldn't have done any of it, but killing their fake person off on the same day his grandmother died. WTF. And then later coming back right before his Heisman moment.. more WTF. They could have just said things changed and blocked him.

They ruined his moment and a majority of the time he had to experience college. He actually looked relieved not to win the Heisman.

I wonder if the only way they got the person to tell their story was to go easy on them. People can still see how horrible they were. Manti seems like such a classy guy.

I never share memes, but even I shared these back in 2013.

Also, Teo has said he had lied about meeting the girl. This can be conveniently explained that he was embarrassed by the ruse, which at this point, he said he had finally figured out, but sure seems suspiciously like someone in on the hoax from the start.

He was embarrassed about being in a relationship with someone he hadn't met. This is common in questionable long distance relationships where people are embarrassed, because they also have some skepticism. So they may lie about having met them, because they feel like others won't understand and will judge them. It does not mean they are in on the hoax. The fact that he actually admitted to this just further convinces me he is telling the entire truth. This made him even more genuine to me.

After watching the doc I am convinced he was not in on it whatsoever.

This is what I remember really pissing me off. He damn near swept the defensive player awards over guys like Jadeveon Clowney and Jarvis Jones because his “girlfriend” had cancer and he had a bunch of picks on batted balls (and even then his INT and tackle numbers weren’t historically significant).

What’s funny is that in the documentary everybody said that Manti “was off” in that national championship game because of his troubles with the girlfriend. Naw dawg. Alabama just whooped that arse. And they would have whooped that arse if he was 100 percent.

interesting story/subject matter.
Not an entertaining documentary at all.
Made it through the first episode and have zero desire to hear another word of naya’s side of the story.
