who, if we’re going on the “sheltered Mormon” theory, should be incredibly understanding of Teo not being romantically or sexually experienced yet. Should be like “Nah, dad no girlfriend yet. But I hope to find a godly woman who’ll please you and mom.”
Yeah I completely disagree

I don’t think he was in on it. He’s 31 now and his NFL career is likely over. He would have no reason to keep up the ruse at this point.
ETA - I found the documentary entertaining. I found Te’O likable. It also shows how mentally screwed up and lacking any shred of sympathy or morals this trannie is. Not a good look for the alphabet people.

Well, similarly, unless he’s interested in getting in on the lucrative, trashy, past-their-prime, fallen-from-grace celebrity gig (TLC reality show, Howard Stern butt-monkey, etc.), he doesn’t have a reason to divulge it either.

How about don’t ever, never, fricking lie about who/what you are to people especially in a personal/intimate setting?

Not saying there is hard evidence either way. But how does someone with an above average IQ (I may be being generous, but surely he's not dumb*) fall for a trick that obvious all the way up to almost age 22?
Others have hit on him being sheltered but remember this started in 2010, and came out in late 2012. The idea of “catfishing” wasn’t a thing then. The MTV doc didn’t come out until 2012. By time he maybe got the hint he had been full on into it for 2+ years.
They also show that she would call and have her toddler sister talk on the phone too. That’s pretty nuts for a catfish to take that risk, you can’t predict what a kid will say.
I’ve loved Teo since his time at ND, so I’m very biased, but he seems to be an extremely good person who tries to do right who got taken advantage of by a piece of shite mentally unstable person and drug through the mud by an absolute rag of a publication who are now all unemployed for their bullshite.

Te’o comes off as a genuinely good dude. Just an idiot
Mostly this. Idiot isn’t the word I’d use. He definitely wasn’t in on it. But ignorant to the real world is what I’d say.
He was an extremely sheltered Polynesian Mormon kid that was thrust into the national spotlight after living in a tiny bubble for 18 of his 19 years.
It’s not impossible to imagine that he wouldn’t have full social awareness after living 1 year in the real world.
I definitely piled on with the jokes when it was all going down. He was an easy target. Now I feel bad for it.
And sincerely frick the dude that lied his way into a false relationship with an impressionable teenager.

And that online "real world" was still in its infancy. I mean he got tangled up in this ruse exactly when the movie Catfish came out. So he really wasn't mentally privy to the depths social media was sinking to beforehand.

i laughed about the situation when it was going down but feel sorry for Manti now. He was invested in the relationship. He spoke to Lennay via computer and the telephone. I can't believe that tranny could make his voice sound so feminine. Manti even spoke to the child on the phone making it seem even more real.
questions I have about the situation:
How could he go so long in the relationship without finally being determined to meet "her" in person?
When she was in the hospital after the wreck and she found out she had leukemia, why didn't he insist that he go to the hospital to see her, rather than talk to her on the phone?
what was the tranny's endgame with returning from the dead and contacting Manti again? He obviously was skeptical but the tranny provided a picture with everything that Manti requested. This was all going on while he was going to the Heisman ceremony. I can't imagine what was going through that dude's head.
The tranny is legit crazy for attempting to return from the dead. Also, it shows no remorse for what it did. It seriously hurt Manti's NFL career. It cost Manti millions of dollars. Did Manti ever sue the tranny for costing him millions? Obviously, you would never get anything from it.
did the girl from the pictures ever contact Manti and try to get something going? He was an NFL player.
just a crazy story.

“sheltered Mormon” theory,
Oh, come on. He was big man on campus from day 1. . .plenty little Catholic coeds in South Bend willing to drop their drawers for him. He's a man.
The doc portrays him as a leader at ND and somewhat comfortable in that position. I just don't understand how he could fall for "Lennay" - hook, line, and sinker. . .for YEARS without meeting "her." Very, very gullible.
I don't think he was in on it, but "Lennay" should fry.

I guess school and football took up 90% of his time. I think I woulda got pissed after a month of shim not being able to facetime/skype, etc..

Yeah I think I would've just showed up without telling shim. Then he would have found out...

Yeah that part was wild! Shim actually contacted ol girl and had her hold up a frickin sign!

Shim is a narcissistic count. Absolutely no remorse. And yes, it ended up costing him millions...

I was wondering the same thing at the end.
I kind of kept up with this when the story broke but it was a ND player so I lost interest. I had no idea just how fricked up this was until I watched the show.

They somewhat address the long distance thing when his best friend was saying he was in a long distance relationship too. I can imagine many of those kids from Hawaii are in them if they go to the mainland for school, especially if the school is in South Bend, Indiana. Think it was probably normal in his community, going back to him being sheltered and unaware of the world.

now that you mention it, he didn't even need to meet in person. They could facetime or skype. How could you go that long without ever physically and visually speaking to the woman? But I don't know how prevalent/reliable skype and facetime were back then. They did mention it a bit where shim said she always had an excuse why the phone or computer wouldn't work.

He was catfished by Jabba the Hut.
I feel for him and he seems like a solid dude.
I can't believe they gave Jabba so much screen time to attempt to become a sympathetic character in this. It had the opposite effect on me.

I wonder if Manti wanted to pursue Diane once he realized what had happened. I mean, he was essentially in love with a photo and she was alive and well...

No doubt
He was a scumbag.
He was a scumbag.

You'll never convince me that Te'o...
• isn't either mentally deficient and was pushed through high school and college due to his ability on the field, or...
• had serious suspicions that the girlfriend was fake ("she" refused to send video messages of any kind) but was enjoying the fantasy and didn't want to lose it.
I got the feeling that the father was a level headed straight-shooter, and he knew from the start that his son was a lightweight when it came to dealing with the real world.

A Facebook "friend" you don't know asks you to pose for a picture making a hand gesture and holding a specific coded message... post 9-11...
Plus: With all of that news coverage of her "death", none of her friends told her, "Hey, you're on the News. You're Polynesian and dead."?

He wasn't in love with the photo. He was in love with the relationship. Diane had nothing to do with it. He fell in love with the conversations he had with Lennay and the support "she" offered him.
Hmmmm. . . maybe he knew all along Lennay was a dude.

It's really hard to watch though, that's one of the most public embarrassments I've ever heard of. Complete and utter humiliation. Feel for the guy, but the sick frick who catfished him is a POS.
This is the camp I fall in. Te'o was very publicly humiliated and it did untold damage to him psychologically and financially. The media is cruel. I feel for the dude.
