I’ve personally known someone who was catfished way back in the early 2000s. Reasonably intelligent person with a good job - refused to acknowledge the red flags and refused to listen to his friends (us) who kept asking for proof of existence. They just keep rationalizing and denying to themselves what everyone around them knows. Teo’s best friend knew!

I never understood how the real girl in the photo never saw her picture all over the news for several months.

But how does someone with an above average IQ (I may be being generous, but surely he's not dumb*) fall for a trick that obvious all the way up to almost age 22?

Google “average Pacific Islander IQ” and let us know what Google itself says it is and if you still think that is above average

?????

Google returns 99.2 as the average IQ of the state of Hawaii, which for all intents and purposes is basically like saying “the average of IQ of Hawaii is average” (100 is the standardized mean of all IQ tests).

In addition, Hawaii is higher than many other states in the Union.

I watched the first 15-20 minutes and cut it off. F*** trying to sympathize with that crap.

That story is the only reason he finished second in the Heisman. His numbers were good, but Marquise Lee's season was phenomenal (who finished 4th and missed out on a trip to NYC due to Te'o's deception).

People can be intelligent and feel something is off (which he admits happened at times) but still lie to themselves so much that they start believing something that is obviously a hoax to the rest of us.

He was a young Mormon kid from a small town in Hawaii. He was a pretty sheltered kid from a very religious family. Then he went to Notre Dame. It wouldn’t surprise me if the “girl” was the first one he had ever really talked to romantically. He trusted talking to “her” and if they were in a relationship, he is a man of principal who was probably very strict on himself about not approaching other women.

Te’o comes off kind of like Tebow. Intelligent but socially awkward. He only recently got married.

I do feel bad for him, at least sometimes. He definitely became the butt of a lot of jokes; some deserved, most probably not.

Maybe you shouldn't rely on Richard Lynn as your source.

It's crazy the extent the tranny went to pull this off. Clearly has severe mental issues and surprised Manti didn't press charges. After watching it I realized how good of a guy Manti is, just dumb. Also, how no one sat him down and was like listen dude this is very odd.

He had friended Teo’s cousin previously and was an internet “friend” with him.

Te'o's cousin doesn't catch enough heat in this, IMO. He told Manti that he'd met Lennay in person. Multiple times.

At the end of the day, Te'o must be one of two people. He's either:

A) The most gullible mofo on the planet, thinking that for 3 years he was in love with a real, live girl that he's never seen,

Or

B) He was complicit in the ruse and it all got away from them.

His NFL experience is no different than hundreds of college stars - on the biggest stage, he couldn't hang. This story just gives him a excuse that Tebow and many others didn't have to explain their inadequacy in the NFL.

As aggy, I’m no T’eo defender. He knew that he was peddling a lie come Heisman time and should be shamed for that.

That being said… he recorded 300+ tackles in the NFL. Mediocre as he may be, he had a decent career.
