Good stuff. I don't think that Cohle is undercover for the feds, I think that it is and always has been personal. Another nod to The King in Yellow is that the people who read it are driven mad. That ties in with the thought that once you have seen the truth, you can't go back. I think that Cohle has seen the truth, the "4th dimension", and was changed by it. I think he recognizes it in Audrey just as LeDoux and his partner both recognize it in Cohle. I also think that (again, pure wild assed speculation) that Audrey's death and the revelation of her involvement is the catalyst that pushes Marty to seeing things as Cohle sees them. I don't think that it's a staged falling out, I think that Marty fights the truth that has been right in front of him and he lashes out at Cohle for making him see it. It would very much be a part of his character (see his reaction to his girlfriend seeing another guy, to his daughter getting caught with two guys, to his wife leaving, to him shooting LeDoux). After he goes quickly through denial, he realizes the scope of the truth and works with Cohle to get to the bottom of it.
Or I could be completely full of shite and Marty is the killer. Still don't believe that, though. I also don't believe that the two present day detectives are "in on it" or that they are intentionally trying to pin it on Cohle. I think that someone above them IS in on it and maybe nudged them in that direction, but I believe that the detectives are genuinely trying to solve the case and believe that Cohle is the killer.

I'm not sifting through 50+ pages to see if this has been discussed, but at the end of the trailer for episode 6, the girl says "The man with the scars, he made me watch." The guy that Rust interrogates who puts him back onto the case, the one who copped to the double homicide in the pharmacy, was VERY VERY scarred. His face was covered with what looked like badly healed boils. And then he's dead, wrists sliced on his bed frame...I wonder who he was, what was his role. I wouldn't be surprised if Rust traces him back to the guy cutting the grass at the Tuttle school...MIND BULLETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I would contend that he's too stupid to have been behind this as well. And certainly not capable of keeping someone like Cohle off the track.

Well that guy knew of some info, but was certainly not in a position of power. He was terrified too.
We've seen a couple criminals not that Rust has interrogated with facial scars. Wonder if this cult/church ritualistically scars some members.
