Though, wasn't he espousing the "flat circle" theory/philosophy/belief earlier on? While that might not be belief in an "afterlife" per se, I'd guess it's a belief in some sort of immortality or life after death (even if it is the same life over and over again).

The Kobe deflection doesn't work on the movie board. My post rings true.

The Yellow King plot was a backdrop and vehicle to carry their real investigation: Their search for truth.

Meaning.

This season was nothing more than an essay in existentialism.

I don't think we're meant to take the myth of eternal return seriously. It's an emblem of physical determinism. Perhaps the late Cohle abandons his determinism ("there's always a choice"), but it could be that by "choice" he just means internal desire, as opposed to being compelled by an external force.

I took it as more a trip into Rust's head than any big philosophical enlightenment. I mean hell they were talking about his hallucinations right before he got there and hallucinated at exactly the wrong time.

People who hallucinate but are lucid come up with a LOT of good reasons to explain it. We just got his.

Also, I had a patient back in the nineties that was a teenage boy that had been raised by a pair of deaf schizophrenics on an island in the atchafalaya somewhere who talked REALLY close to the way that woman at the end did. He'd never been to school. Nobody even knew that kid existed and he'd been steadily sexually abused his whole life so he was pretty much beyond help. Had a hard time understanding him because even though he could hear, he'd been taught to talk by a couple of deaf ex-biker/road whore schizophrenics. Kid was a mess but that's the first time I've ever heard anybody that sounded like him. Creeped me right the hell out.

Yeah I don't think the hallucination at the end was supposed to be a heavenly revelation but just the opposite--a hallucinatory experience of Carcosa, eternal return, etc.

His later explanation is not of the hallucination but the peace of slipping into the darkness of death.

That's a fricked story. Yikes.

Won't really elaborate more. He wasn't the worst I saw. Crack whores did really bad things to their kids. Compared to them he was fairly tame. Biggest problem with him was he'd pleasure pretty much anybody that would choke him.

Yeah.
