And the title of the episode further illustrates the struggle with light and dark that Rust is talking about in the final scene. Form is the opposite of void. When Rust was in a coma, he was in the void because a coma is like a living death. You are brain dead except for your heartbeat and breathing. People in comas don't have thoughts.
But in the void he felt his daughter's presence and said it felt real to him. I loved that monologue because it mirrored something he said earlier this season about the faces of people who are near death. He says they look content because they're finally able to let go. When Rust tried to let go, he woke up. So the existential struggle inside Rust continues, but now he has hope that he may be wrong about it.

Sure thing, man.

there is validity to this statement. if you go back and read the threads for the first 3 episodes or so, a lot of what you would see is "holy shite this is the greatest thing I've ever seen on tv" followed by "hey thats the bar a couple miles outside new orleans west on interstate 10".
Don't get me wrong, this show was great, but it seems like around here it was pushed from great to epic because of the location.

Ok, I watched the series and read the entire thread and I think this sums it up for:

there is no better way to admit you've lost than smug condescension.

So you pull a veritable "Simpsons did it" and you think you've won something?

so the theme has been done before
I don't get why this is a big deal for some people?

i think the problem is that Nic P cannibalized his buddy cop story by creating such an intriguing murder mystery. He only wanted to use the mystery to tell rust and marty's story, but based on countless theories discussed here and reddit, it seems more people were interested in solving the mystery. So ultimately when Nic P winds the story down by focusing on marty and rust, and leaving a ton of loose ends with the cult murder mystery, lots of people are ultimately disappointed.

Lost? What did I lose? That light vs dark is pulled from Buffy? Yes, I'm the loser.

for me, this has absolutely nothing to do with it
I give it praise for the following reasons, in this order.
1. Matthew McConaughey does an incredible job of playing a superb character in Rust Cohle.
2. Woody Harrelson does a great job in playing a really good supporting character in Marty Hart.
3. The overall production is very good.

Yeah, that's pretty spot on.

im not trying to win anything. i'm just trying to justify why i thought the show had a lackluster ending.
perhapse saying the other poster "had lost" was a poor choice of words.

I'll add to say that i would like to see him try out a different character type since he started taking serious and dramatic roles.
mud, True Detective, Dallas Buyers Club (for the most part) all felt like the same character to me. Not to say he didn't play them well, but he is becoming a one trick pony in his new career path.

Honestly, do people not know how an investigation goes? You investigate any little clue you can find, and you look into it.
Every little thing does not have to connect to the final outcome.

I can't believe people are upset because the writer of the show didn't consult them between episodes as to how they wanted him to make the next episode.
How is it even enjoyable to watch TV like that?

Not like the show is being heaped with praise nationally or anything.

I really enjoyed the final hospital scene but damn the whole investigation arc got mailed in. So the clue that was under Marty's nose the whole time was a old picture of a random house that had been painted green and the audience isn't even given this until halfway through the last episode? Ugh.
Just name the damn show True Bromance or True Buddy Cop. Don't make this a detective show if the detective part takes a back seat to character development.

No kidding. Stories about the battle between good and evil (light and dark) have been told since the beginning of time and they will be continued to be told.
