Anyone notice how detailed these things have gotten? I was just watching an episode of The Morning Show and it showed this:

quote:

Episode 10 contains disturbing content involving drug abuse and self harm. If you struggle with addiction, depression, or suicidal thoughts, there is help.

So now I know a character is going to kill themself before the show even starts?

Was just watching Severence and they had a similar one about self harm, and I can already guess who that person will be.

The trigger warnings about smoking is absurd but at least those don’t spoil the movie or show.

I don’t know, I sort of get excited when they say there is nudity and sexual content.

I don't know that I've ever seen one of those. I see Severence is on Apple. Is that something they do on there? Don't remember seeing any of those on HBO Max or Prime, but I try to skip to the beginning of each episode, so I may be skipping over that stuff. I eat a lot of edibles, so I just need the story. Don't want to cause any more confusion, man.

That's a lot of melodrama for a 3 second message at the beginning of a program that you forget about completely once the show/movie begins.

I don’t see them very often. It’s almost always when there’s going to be domestic violence or suicide.

I don’t have an issue with it. It’s on the screen for a couple of seconds.

There is a certain type of person, me included, that are ultra-observant. It's a "WTF? I'm watching a movie with a giant asteroid heading towards Earth on the poster, who could be so stupid to feel like they need a warning about catastrophe violence???"

Severance, for instance, clearly outlined how creepy it was going to be before the show ever aired. If you show me trigger warnings before a show about guys playing football (Last Chance U, etc.) and you warn me there will be violence and foul language, I wonder who the hell your audience is and how stupid and vapid you think I am.

OP, just lower your expectations; people are morons, or more exactly, their wives are triggered, and the men just nod their heads and support them pretending they're going to get laid sometime over the next 30 days. That's how this stuff happens.

They have to so people don't try and sue them. Although "trigger warnings" have been around for decades.

To me, a viewer who’s paying any attention whatsoever is already aware of the possibility or likelihood of the events of which they are providing a warning. Does not ruin anything

It is definitely spoilery and definitely ruins the experience on some shows. I try to turn away as soon as I realize it's a "trigger warning."

Is this really all that different from the TV MA content warnings

TV MA or other content warnings have evolved over time. The purpose of them used to be more for parents to be able to see if they should let their kids watch. Today, these detailed warnings seem more directed at adults. Back in the 90s, it was just things like:
- Violence
- Sexual Content
- Nudity

Over time they've added in more specific details of the violence, sexual content, nudity, etc. IMO, if you are an adult, you shouldn't need anything more specific to know what you are getting into....especially if it gives away certain things that will happen in the show / movie.

Hell, Gone With the Wind has a several minute long PSA about racism that couldn't be skipped over last time I watched it.

And Gunsmoke warns of "Outdated cultural depictions."
