I like doing the casting choice of Michael Angarano as Jack's brother. He was a stand out on the Showtime series I'm Dying Up Here

Was a normal dad when jack was a kid and jacks brother was born.

What changed him?

I bet Nick is not his kid. Probably finds out somewhere along the line that the mailman knocked up his wife or something twisted.

On this note, I'd be more inclined to believe he found out Jack wasn't his child, but I don't think it's either. I think something with his own father changes him and it goes on down the line. His dad drank, he drank and then Jack drank.

I'm betting Jack's father was already an alcoholic and then stopped drinking when Jack was born. Then something triggers a relapse.

So I’m too young for the Vietnam era but let me get this straight..

Jack reads that his little bro is in trouble in Vietnam
Jack enlists/volunteers and goes through basic training and gets promoted quickly
Jack goes and visits his little bro

Did they fast track basic training/promotions for Vietnam ?
Were the draftees under 1 year contracts or how did that work ?
Seems this happened super fast

Yeah, my money's on the reveal that Nick wasn't his kid.

Damn, these writers are good!

This Is Us' Fans Missed This Insane Clue About Jack's Necklace

quote:

The writers of This Is Us frequently drop subtle hints into every episode to tease future storylines. (Case in point: Here are a few things you probably missed on last night's "Vietnam" episode.)

One moment in particular that slipped under the radar Tuesday occurred during one of the flashback scenes set in Vietnam. After a young boy comes up to Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) to give him a fresh fish, the boy's mother runs up to scold him.

The woman appears on-screen for just about five seconds, but it was enough time for eagle-eyed This Is Us fans to notice something peculiar about her outfit.

Holy Sh*t! Did You Catch This Vietnamese Woman Wearing Jack's Necklace on This Is Us? LINK pic.twitter.com/3JIsBvOTNX

— Kpatra (@KPATRAmag) October 17, 2018
On Twitter, several viewers pointed out that the woman is wearing a necklace that resembles the one Jack gave Kevin (Justin Hartley) as a present when he was a teen.

Am I the only one who thinks that the young woman who called the little boy away from Jack, and with whom Jack had a fleeting moment of eye contact is the "special person" who gave him his Buddhist necklace? #ThisIsUs #JackPearson

— ? (@cupcake010102) October 17, 2018
In Season 2, Jack gave Kevin the necklace after he was injured in his high school football game. Since then, the memento was very important to Kevin, and it was the one item Jack saved for Kevin in the family's house fire.

Jack gives Kevin a necklace when he is told that he can’t play football again.

Jack: I was feeling very lost when I got that, but I put it on and moved forward. I was wearing it when you were born. . . You were my purpose and I swear to you that you will find yours #ThisIsUs

— Kristin Weaver (@KristinJWeaverr) October 9, 2018
The scene in which the young boy interrupts Jack's conversation with his superior does seem a bit random, and, as we know, the This Is Us writers don't add any characters in by accident.

Reddit user Marty5151 also thinks the woman's cameo could signify that she and Jack will somehow be involved in a relationship. "[Writers] made a point of showing her and Jack defended her when the other soldier was saying her little boy would try to kill them when he turned 15," the user says.

Only time will tell if any of these fan-theories are true.

i predict that jack fathered a Vietnamese child with the woman that he was unaware of, and the bastard child will come looking for him.

I had issue with this also. Plus he went from E-1 to E-6 immediately. It’s like they just said frick it.

Fan fiction alert.

A better story would’ve been if Jack had already been drafted and went to Nam once. Knew what a shite show it was, Then signed up again to go with his brother.

The actress actually got fatter after the producers asked her to lose weight

The original pitch was that she was going to actually get a gastric bypass and that would be part of her story. The producers were going to pay for it and get her the best surgeon that their was, but when the show started, public outcry was all "You're perfect the way you are and no need to lose any weight!". At least the actually addressed the health risks of her being gigantic in one of the recent episodes

There's a thread on the OT asking "do you hate fat people?"

My answer is no, but I'm starting to hate Kate.

Yeah, Mrs. Vox caught the necklace part. We were discussing that last night.

This is the only correct answer. Those "healthy at any size" nutjobs can GTFO. I could stand to lose a little weight around the middle, but goddammit, Kate is downright cetacean.

When they went to Kevin's premiere, first thing I thought of is "How the frick is she going to fit into a theater seat???"

Two year contract for draftees, one year in Vietnam was combat tour length for Army.

So is jacks brother gonna die, and the Asian woman seeing him grief stricken and drinking heavily, gives him the necklace in a touching moment with the music playing ?

That was a great episode. Seeing where Jack got “breathe” from was an awesome moment. I knew something was up with the Vietnamese girl. I wonder if Jack’s dad didn’t have some WW2 mental baggage.

agree with this.

I liked it overall but the constant push to beatify Jack gets wayyy too ham fisted at times

MY BROTHER IS IN TROUBLE I MUST ENLIST AND GO TO WAR!

like, we get it. Jack is great but come on.

I think that maybe Nick kills himself but I could also see him do something super brave and save Jack for once thus causing Jack to feel guilty because had he not gone there Nick might have lived.

Was good to get some clarity over the heart defect too.

When he dies it’s like “Oh yea your husband had a defective heart lol sry” and they never really elaborated but then you see him as a kid and at the doc which shows the big picture.
