What are you talking about? They created it. Subtle message: don't get married; don't have kids.

Fox was brand new back then. To get market share, it allowed a lot more edgy stuff such as this and In Living Color

Unhappily Ever After is a hidden gem from the same era.

You do know that the basic theme of this show was to make fun of Archie Bunker, right?

And if they were writing Al Bundy today, he would be acceptable of gays

Al accepted gays back in the original series. Nathan Lane played a guy whose husband was out dancing with Peggy and Al damn near wanted to swap the two of them because he was very manly yet would also cook a gourmet dinner every night.

To be fair it did have a 10 or 11 season run.

I catch it here and there in reruns and it’s still super hilarious. Holds up very well. And the total and complete un-PC-ness of it makes it that much more lovable for me these days.

She was a rug muncher but played a straight woman’s lib housewife with a trophy husband.

My favorite scene with Marcy was when she had to give a speech and was hypnotized into transferring her fears into something else, so as she gave the speech she got increasingly “excited” until she climaxed in front of the audience. Al, Peg, and Jefferson have blank stares knowing what is going on. Then the camera cuts to Marcy holding a cigarette.

There is another scene where Marcy gets conned into working a shift at the Jiggly Bar to persuade Al to sell his car to Marcy’s boss who was played by Mr. Miyagi for a promotion. Mr. Miyagi says something sexist to Marcy and then decks Mr. Miyagi.

Both are probably NSFW but you can find them on YouTube.

Amanda Bearse was a lesbian and directed a few dozen episodes. This wasn’t blind machismo humor, and she understood that. It was satire.

A great show. I watched some episodes with my 85 year old father on Pluto this past weekend. He still found it funny.

Her cups runneth over was one of the best episodes in sitcom history.
