The release of Christopher Nolan's new film "Tenet" has been delayed indefinitely

I'm sure other films will follow. I don't think movie theaters will be opening up any time soon.

quote:

Warner Bros. has removed “Tenet” from its release calendar, delivering a big blow on the exhibition industry at a time when movie theaters had hoped to peg their re-opening to the late summer debut of Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi thriller.

Though necessary given the mass uncertainty over when cinemas across the globe can safely reopen, the decision further complicates Hollywood’s already bumpy plan to revive moviegoing. “Tenet” was originally scheduled to debut on July 17 but was pushed back twice until Aug. 12. It’s unclear when it will now welcome audiences, but the studio plans to share a new release date “imminently.”

“We will share a new 2020 release date imminently for Tenet, Christopher Nolan’s wholly original and mind-blowing feature,” said Warner Bros. chairman Toby Emmerich in a statement. “We are not treating Tenet like a traditional global day-and-date release, and our upcoming marketing and distribution plans will reflect that.”

I don't think a lot of them will be opening up ever again.

If this thing drags on, direct-to-home rental release may become the norm.

Nobody wants to be the first Guinea pig and have their box office bomb.

That would suck. I have an OK 5.2.2 system and if this happened I would invest more heavily in a true home theater but dammit. I love going to the movies especially for big blockbusters. The world continues its march into further introversion.

There was a Regal Cinemas that was a 10-minute walk away from my apartment complex. It has officially permanently closed its doors.

Can’t wait to watch a Tenet/X-men New Mutants double header in theaters in 2024.

At some point, some big movie is going to have take the chance and be the first one out.

As of now that would be...the new James Bond movie in November?

I expect that to be pushed as well.

Yep. In the article it notes how all of the studio and theater chains were hedging their bets on Nolan's Tenet as a return to normalcy for the movie industry. Now that it has been delayed again, expect more delays to follow.

Agreed.

Really happy we were able to see the ending to Avengers vs. Thanos story on the big screen.

But that would suck.

You can't get near the experience watching a big budget blockbuster in your home that you can watching it in a theater with Dolby Atmos, reclining seats and, most importantly, Popcorn with M&Ms dumped in. And a big, huge coca cola.

It's a cheat day.

To be honest, this is possibly the best timing ever for Marvel story telling wise.

Give a chance for time to pass, and “fatigue” to fade, and more importantly add a defined gap after their decade long build up to a climax before starting a whole another cycle

Can James Cameron sacrifice one of his 12 Avatar sequels being filmed concurrently?

We have found New Mutants purpose. Their sacrifice will allow millions others to live.

Writer from the WaPo

tl;dr
Warner Bros is trying to open Tenet overseas by the end of August (China-permitting) and in the U.S. in September (virus-permitting). There is no plan, there is not even the smallest hint of a scintilla of a plan, to premiere in the U.S. on digital first.
