My simple point on memento is that he is trying to provoke thought in the viewer. Clearly this ending did it, so I think Chris Nolan's point is that he didn't want to make it clear what would happen after he left the ship and went after the girl.

if so, it's a completely perfunctory conclusion that has very little to do with the film's "big ideas" that are supposedly the topics that the film hopes to inspire discussion in. other than a reaffirmation of Coop's legacy as an explorer, the ending is meaningless. (and wouldnt there have been rescue missions before? hell, even ones launched within the timeline of them finding Coop drifting in space?)

i really hated how little mystery there is in the movie. everything is detailed in pretty weak expository dialogue, like Nolan was afraid of failing to completely wrap everything up for general audiences. sure, the science is often interesting, but it's presented with so little tact that the it took me out of the movie more than a few times. its kindof baffling that one of the movie's biggest unexplained moments is an ending that is a glorified cliffhanger at best.

This is true.

Couple moments reminded me of those movies Discovery Channel will make to explain super volcanoes and stuff like that. Where the dialogue takes 20 second classroom sessions that seem out of place and then the movie starts again

That dickbag got the lead in Martian too.

He ruins movies. His face makes me violent and I'm not sure why.

I don't think that poster actually hated him. I think he just hated his character.

Highly disagree. The only ending that could have happened in this movie is a tearful reunion with his daughter. I had little doubt that Cooper would survive the black hole simply because of his promise to his daughter.
He did reunite with her. He was her ghost. He came back to her in the past and present.

And for the tearful reunion, she basically said I have my own family now, see ya dad.

Saw it this afternoon - I was stoked, tempered somewhat by the last couple of trailers - I still had very high expectations and the film exceeded them. A real solid story - albeit a predictable one - I figured out Coop was the "Ghost" before he left on the mission, and the special effects were a storytelling tool, not and end - in and of themselves or the reason to make the film.

Like the robots without the traditional robot structure - and I like that the film as about 70% an homage to 2001 and the remaining 30% as a Nolan story.

Not ready to crown it the greatest Nolan film, yet, as it needs to congeal a bit. But, my best film experience in years - and most of you guys know - I hate everything.

Reminds me of this. Got to hand it to Nolan - he will make you think! Still digesting Interstellar.

Wow. I have never been affected like that by a movie. I felt drained at the end. Had to sit for a few minutes and gather myself when it was over.

Just got back.

A good, not great, movie that relies a lot on getting emotion out of some extremely cliched moments (outside of MM watching his children age on video, very well done there).

It's a competently made film, good acting and set pieces. But the writing bogs itself down significantly. It takes forever to start. The Matt Damon sequence was a massive waste of time, and they went all expository at too many moments.

It aimed higher than Inception, but it's about as good, which is definitely better than 90% of films out there, but it's just missing some umph.

It is nowhere near as important/influential as 2001, fwiw. Those comparisons should stop. Where Interstellar is a rather pedestrian father/daughter story told through the lens of complex science, 2001 is literally ABOUT evolution itself and every frame of the film is specifically constructed to talk about it. (Notice I didn't say "as good" that's far too subjective. But it is NOT like 2001 in any sense.)

Solid 3/4.

My thoughts.

It's a pretty good movie I'll probably never watch again.

The great: Matthew M. and the little girl who played his daughter. The visuals.

The decent: the plot. It was somewhat original yet very predictable and (as usual with Nolan) somewhat convoluted.

The bad: Matt Damon was terrible in this movie. His character was a complete waste of time. Cooper's son was a complete waste of time thereby making Casey Affleck a waste of time. Many times we lol'ed at some of the hokey/forced dialog. The editing was horrible but that's to be expected with Nolan.

The HORRIBLE: I can't believe I am saying this but Zimmer's score SUCKED. It distracted me and didn't fit with more of the emotional scenes. It was like trying to watch a funeral at a planetarium.

Anne Hathaway's haircut: This has it's own scale. Hathaway's hairstyle in this movie was a tribute to NAMBLA and it excelled at that as it made her TRULY look like a 12 year old boy.

At the end of the day, the movie wasn't really a sci-fi movie at all. Interstellar was a great father/daughter drama dressed up in 2001's sci-fi pajamas.

With all that said this was a nice bounce back from the TDKR train wreck. Solid 72/100.

I wouldn't be this harsh, but I agree with a lot of this,

I agree with most of it. Matt Damon just takes you out of the film because he is just being Matt damon...

Will never be answered

And this is a serious weak point for the film.

People are going to defend it as some "mystery," but it's simply illogical. It was cheap. Better to end without knowing anything, like some have said MM floating in space.

If they're fifth dimensional beings, then the simple concept of them being fifth dimensional beings answers the question. Fifth dimensional beings live simultaneously through all times and possible realities. Therefore it doesn't really need to be addressed. The point of it being fifth dimensional beings is to show humanity's true ultimate potential, and it is shockingly feasible hundreds of thousands if not millions of years from now that it may be possible.

Paradox? Anne Hathaway's character was on the planet setting up the fertilized eggs and setting up new home.
