Tenet was pretty much a bomb. 370 box office on 200 production budget (ex-marketing). I expect this one to die pretty quickly once the die hard fans have had their fill. He made some bad choices here and the movie will pay. I like Nolan a lot, but he's made mistakes in the past.

tenet was released in 2020 during covid. I think that's nolans worst film, but you can’t bring up the box office. That number is actually pretty decent for when it was released.

They brought in many many critics for this. Independent ones
The "influencers" are the bought and paid ones. Literally everyone in the industry knows that if you have a pile of shite movie, you do influencer screenings not critic screenings

I mean, it's seems like it's been a wide variety of critics so far (from what I've seen). Unless you're suggesting every single actual movie critic is bought and paid for.
Also worth noting that when it's all said and done we'll see through continued sales after the first weekend and viewer scores to go along with the critic scores of whether it's actually good.

My counter is going to be, then who do you suggest they have do early viewings if the thought process by some is:
"Legacy media" are "shills"
"Influencers" aren't credible and just paid to be there.
Then who does that leave to legitimately review this movie to your satisfaction?

it will still do well because people will go see it and judge for themselves
if it has major issues then you will see the fallout weekend 2 of release
then again, directors and actors/actresses like to sabotage their own work before it hits theaters, not very bright

I would guess that there is a tremendous amount of the Reddit revolutionaries crowd pre-buying to make a statement. This movie has become much more politicized than Opp ever was. I'm betting there will be a significant week to week drop off after the fanboys and Reddit types hit the opening. I might be wrong, but just my hunch.

Maybe, maybe not. I certainly have critics that I follow that I think have more credibility than others.

A paid influencer to me isn't anymore "regular people" than a mainstream critic. They absolutely serve to benefit from having an extreme reaction to gain clicks/views.

Depends on the quality of the film. If it's really good, it'll be huge. If it's mediocre, it'll fall off just like every other film. I don't think this "controversy" is going to make much of a difference, either way.

Why would you put "controversy" in quotes? You don't think this is real?
I have no idea how the film will do, but pretending that there is no controversy (as you discuss the controversy itself) is as silly as pretending that Nolan just innocently made all these choices and is baffled by the reactions.

While true, I listen to the content of what they say more than the tone they say it in.
An influencer saying "this is the worst thing I've ever seen" with no backup to that can be ignored. An influencer saying the movie sucks with a structured takedown of what's wrong with it is someone you can probably believe.
Just being a influencer doesn't automatically mean their opinion is null and void. I find my views of movies tend to align more with them than the average stuffy movie critic from Variety. They just put a piece out earlier about how amazing the live-action Moana is
