The Academy requires a certain amount of minority casting and crew for awards consideration. Nolan is working with what he has to.

This is one of the biggest myths about the film industry right now. If you actually read through the Academy's bylaws on this, it is virtually impossible to become ineligible for the Oscars. You literally have to go out of your way. There was only one black actor in Nolan's last film (Oppenheimer) and he was portraying an actual historical person (J. Ernest Wilkins Jr.). The character appears in but one scene in that whole three-hour epic.

Considering what he’s made the last 10 years or so and who knights for him, did you expect otherwise?

Achilles would have already been dead by the time this scene happens.

I can't put into words how much I hate Nolan's editing style

His movies are like music videos the way they just jump around to shite with music pounding

Gorransson

This guy has been on fire. He's 41. Zimmer was 32 when he was nominated for Rain man. Gorransson was about 35 for his first nomination. I know it sounds obvious but will be interesting to follow his career since Zimmer is now 68.

His flaws have always been his editing and his audio. You just have to accept it by this point. He's not going to change.

his audio
I love Nolan movies but I'll jump on board with this one. The characters all whisper to each other but everything else is cranked up to 11.

Oppenheimer has been the worst offender, so far.

his audio

I have heard this complaint for a decade (since Dark Knight rises?) and never once had it be an issue for me.

I know people aren’t making it up because I hear from here, x, TexAgs, etc but I’ve never once had a hard time understanding dialogue.

I have not seen tenet since it was in theaters, but that film was bad. There's a scene where they're out on the water discussing key plot points, and I remember thinking I can barely hear what they're saying.

This is something Nolan himself has admitted to:

quote:

“I like to use the performance that was given in the moment rather than the actor re-voice it later,” Nolan said. “Which is an artistic choice that some people disagree with, and that’s their right.”

Nolan refuses to record ADR, so whatever vocal takes he gets on the day of filming are what go into the film’s theatrical cut. That can be a risk in a movie like “Oppenheimer” considering the IMAX cameras used to shoot the film are incredibly loud on set, although Nolan said they are getting better.

He doesn’t need to ADR anything, he needs to turn the music and ambient sounds down in the mix

and turn the lights up. Gritty realism is fine but if the point of a film is to show and tell, I need to be able to see it (and hear it)

I love Ancient Greek history. Have zero desire to see modern slop Odyssey. The cast told me all I needed to know.

Surely you know that Ethiopians were present in Ancient Greece right?
