…is dumb.
Agree? Upvote.
Disagree? Fight me.
WTF is happening, why, and what is it supposed to mean?

The whole final season was asinine. The eventual saviors of the resistance end up being this black communist group we'd literally NEVER heard mentioned by either the resistance, the NAZIs or the Japanese?
I never read the Philip K. Dick story so I don't know how far they strayed from the original concept, but this show was a great example of a great idea that never seemed to materialize. I watched three seasons based on the solid, interesting premise and a handful of solid performances despite the actual show never living up to either.

The last season is almost universally despised on this board.
Leave it to Hollywood to believe the real heroes are Black Communists.

Apart from the BCR pissing everyone off, WTF was up with hundreds of people just walking through the portal for no reason like they were zombies.
Where were they coming from?
Why?
Why did they look as if they knew what was going on?
What opened the portal?
Why was this all so stupid?

Biggest problem with the last season was there was supposed to be least 2 more that were wrote and ready to go and amazon pulled the plug on the show after they had finished season 5.. so they didnt get the GoT treatment to know that the last season was gonna be the last one so changed couldnt be made

I was fascinated with the concept and the story for the first couple of seasons. I thought the problem they ran into was akin to what we saw with LOST.
Fantastic initial idea, intriguing concept, and then... how to wrap it all up in a satisfying full story.
It failed, miserably.
Also see The Expanse, GoT, and others.

The show is about 90% different than the book
That isn't a bad thing. The book IMO doesn't have a whole lot after the initial premise to support a show.

Correct. IIRC, once Tagomi figures out how to phase between worlds on the park bench overlooking Golden Gate Bridge, it pretty much ends, doesn't it? I haven't read the book in almost 10 years.

I'm a fan of fantastical elements in shows, but I think this would've been a better show if it was just a realistic take on America with Japanese and German occupation. Smith being an American that turned Nazi to save his family, then eventually sacrifices himself to liberate America would've been a great character arc.

This makes so much sense so good to know. I loved the first two seasons, and then the last one just goes off the rails into total suckage. As mentioned, throw in some typical ruin-it leftism and you have a great series destroyed in season three.

It's stupid, and I don't understand why the 'real' world had to join the fascist world. You would think it'd be the other way around. Been a while since I watched it but that was the question I had

I stopped watching halfway through the series when the commies arrived. Got off the rails imo but it is such an interesting premise.
I would’ve liked to see a bit more back story on the German/Japanese invasion. I know they dropped a bomb on dc and we basically capitulated but a bit more info would’ve been good

It all began with FDR's assassination in Miami in 1939. Without Roosevelt's leadership, the Reich was going strong and the US wasn't ever able to peel away Von Braun and the rest of the German physicists who assisted with the Manhattan Project. They stayed home and came up with the bomb for the home team.

So, they did the book justice then?
Because that's exactly what the show felt like...a good premise with a few good/great performances and then nothing but filler.

I think the whole idea of having different dimensions was terrible to begin with. The show had an awesome concept of what it was like if America won. It was great. But then you add in the dimensions and there’s not really a good way to end that story.

I didn't hate the BCG when they first showed up but the whole plot line was rushed. They somehow turned into viet-cong in one season. I wouldn't have had an issue with it had it been developed rather than just "damn they blew some shite I guess we should go back to Japan". Like most have said there was a ton of stuff that could have been done with this show.
Smith sticking to his Nazi plans was until the end was great, he didn't need redemption.

It definitely seemed like they started on his redemption arc only to say, "Eh, screw it."

His ending was the only I was satisfied with. He had bought in 100% to the Nazi ideology. Even seeing what could have happened couldn't fully turn him away.

I fully expected them to try and redeem Smith. He was easily the most complex of all the characters in the show. This is funniest because Obergruppenfurher/Reichsmarshal John Smith didn't exist in the novella.
