I think by saying he enjoyed the show he is saying that he was entertained. I was also entertained, thought it was very well acted, directed, and had beautiful cinematography. Looking forward to catching episode three at 9PM tonight!

I watched both episodes earlier in the week, and after sitting on them for a few days here are my thoughts.
The sights and sounds are fantastic. Besides the elves haircuts everything looks too notch.
The acting has been good enough that me as a lay person hasn't noticed it.
The writing has been passable to poor. The prologue was very poorly done. I very much dislike Elves acting very human, such as the bratty kids sinking Galadriel's boat or the elf guard getting told he stinks. On the other hand, I've liked everything to do with the dwarves. Galadriel is the only character I currently just really dislike. I am even entertained by the harfoots so far, which I thought I would hate with the passion of 1000 suns.
I gave up long ago on this being an adequate Tolkien adaptation, but if this was generic fantasy I would be in it for the first season at least. We will see how it goes. As it is it is way better than the Wheel of Time. My wife is enjoying it, and since she has never read any Tolkien I'm using her as my barometer for the general public. So far her reception is luke warm to interested.

Tolkien said it was a mythology for England which had been co-opted by French Arthur mythology.
Please find the quote of his saying this then. The man never called it a mythology for England.
What he said was :
quote:
Do not laugh! But once upon a time (my crest has long since fallen) I had a mind to make a body of more or less connected legend, ranging from the large and cosmogonic, to the level of romantic fairy-story – the larger founded on the lesser in contact with the earth, the lesser drawing splendour from the vast backcloths – which I could dedicate simply to: to England; to my country.

The more I think about that prologue, the more I hate it. Just so poorly done and it’s supposed to set the tone of the series

It should possess the tone and quality that I desired, somewhat cool and clear, be redolent of our ‘air’ (the clime and soil of the North West, meaning Britain and the hither parts of Europe; not Italy or the Aegean, still less the East), and, while possessing (if I could achieve it) the fair elusive beauty that some call Celtic (though it is rarely found in genuine ancient Celtic things), it should be ‘high’, purged of the gross, and fit for the more adult mind of a land long now steeped in poetry. I would draw some of the great tales in fullness, and leave many only placed in the scheme, and sketched. The cycles should be linked to a majestic whole, and yet leave scope for other minds and hands, wielding paint and music and drama. Absurd.’ (Letters, 144-145)
quote:
It is also worth noting that a close reader of Letters will also find the unsent letter from 1956 to Mr. Thompson where Tolkien also references this desire, and his desire does not seem as dormant there as it does in the letter to Waldman. This is less valuable evidence because we do not know who the recipient was to be and Tolkien never actually sent the letter, meaning he could have been in the process of considering his opinion.

Just finished watching the 1st 2 episodes and I thought it kinda sucked. I'm not a huge Tolkien guru so I went into this with no prior knowledge of the story line though I have watched all of the Hobbits and LotR. I'll watch another and hope it gets better but it feels like a children's show. I don't know if that was the intention or if Amazon is just pulling another Wheel of Time

The first 2 eps have made me fascinated with this world again to where I’ve been looking up the lore all week and it’s incredible
This is a great channel that explains much of the lore for anyone interested
LINK
The back story of when Melkor was a god and the feud he had with the ainor is fascinating. The story of the ainor using music to create the world and melkor making his own to twist it and the clash he had with Iluvetar with iluvetar umtimately creating a hymn that overcomes melkor is mind bending and could be amazing if done right. Not to mention the ensuing rivalry Tulkas has with Melkor and the fight for Arda. Learning all this makes the LOTR trilogy seem so minuscule when you consider how grand of a scale this world started on

Do what you’ve learned is Tolkien never called it a mythology for England. The quote you chose starts and ends with him dismissing it.
Maybe there was this intent and it grew into something bigger. There is also definitely heavy European mythology influences in his work (he did cal Gandalf an Odinesque figure)
But again, none of this is so rock solid that it requires we read the whole series through some kind of Anglo-Saxon/jute/Celtic lense.
Tolkien never said so, and the vast majority of people reading the books do so without knowing any of this, and seem to enjoy them just fine and take away the central messages and themes.

Who gives a shite whether there are black elves or dwarves. Doesn't affect my enjoyment one bit. Oh, I know who gives a shite, a racist internet dweeb. You guys are making arguments about skin color in a world with dragons, magic rings, and wizards. Give me a break.
The same racists like you who hate white elves or dwarves and needed a change. You woke soy boy nerds need to gain virtue signaling points for your cosplay meetings.
I could have taken a shite on your favorite hamburger and you would still be trying to convince the world that it’s the greatest hamburger ever.

The nerd of the rings guy simply reads the text. That’s fine and all, but if you’re looking for deep analysis, look at dork lords, the red book or darth Gandalf.

So how bad is it tonight and how many times am I going to be called a racist for pointing out the basic lore and having a problem when it is defiled?

How? It brought up none of it save for the Two Trees.

Honestly, if the prologue was done correctly, you would have really been blown away. Seriously, it did nothing right besides the showing of the Trees. The prologue should have been at least 20 minutes long. Jealous you’re now going to be experiencing Middle Earth truly for the first time.

A bunch of woke white nerds calling people racist doesn’t mean anything.
They are a bunch of nazi queers who celebrate trans people. They are the mentally ill or society

Honestly the Prologue needed to establish the following:
1) The Two Trees (they showed them but that’s it)
2) Fëanor forging the Silmarils largely in envy of Galadriel
3) The Destruction of the Two Trees, abduction of the Silmarils, and the Oath of Fëanor
4) The Three Kinslayings of the Elves
5) The Burning of the Ships
6) The Rise of the Sun and Moon
7) The Destruction of the House of Fëanor and fate of Maedhros and Maglor’s Silmarils.
8) Eärendil and Elwing‘s plea to the Valar to assist in the War of Wrath
9) The Planting of the White Tree of Nimloth and founding of Numenor
That should take at least 20 minutes to show and explain. Instead it’s just trash with Galadriel and a paper boat of Elven children acting like bullies.
