1.) who gives a frick if Bezos loses money, I hope his workers unionize everywhere and Bezos tumbles down the wealth rankings, crying the whole way. frick him.
2.) If we are looking at this from an investment standpoint, you can't just look at simple accounting.
3.) The actual money spent so far is around 700 million and 250 million of that was for the rights. Rights that will be used across 5 seasons of TV.
4.) An Amazon Prime Membership is $139 a year and comes with the streaming service. Finding out how much of that retention and new membership should be contributed to LOTR is probably something no one on this site will ever know. Likely the only way we can discern the financial health is if LOTR continues to be funded the way through and at a high level. Which would suggest it's justifying it's expenses. Or Bezos just doesnt care, and in that case, frick it, spend your money away for all I care.

Amazon prime users are 163.8 million subs in 2022 with only 25 million views. It would not cost them a dime extra for more people to view the work, but they could only get 25 million to watch it. That is not very well received. Amazon did not buy LOTRs to lose money,

Which is the largest in Prime history by a large margin.
Do you just assume every Prime subscriber watches their streaming? Thats a horrendously stupid assumption to make. I have family and relatives that have had Prime for years but don't even know how to stream.
I know some of you all are wrapping up your identities into the viewership of this shows to validate your hatreds, but 25 million streaming views in 24 hours in no world is a bad number. Unless we now want to call House of The Dragon a flop as well
PROTIP: Maybe focus on the long-term viewer retention numbers. That will be what determines how successful this ultimately is.

I have Prime for the free shipping, and I get more than my money's worth because I use it for my small business.
I haven't streamed anything at all since May, until this. The Tolkien fans I know who aren't Culture War fanatics first are enjoying the show, even if they have issues with it.
I think that the general public's reaction is positive so far. But people are ultimately going to make up their minds later. If the show is good, people will go back and watch from the beginning. If it's bad, people like me will quit in disgust.

Also Sauron didn’t know about the existence of Hobbits until he captured Gollum.
This.
Which makes me believe it’s Sauron the way the writers will go
It’s impossible it’s Gandalf or Saruman.
You would think it has to be the blue wizards.
Posted on 9/7/22 at 6:26 pm to CP3LSU25
If it is Sauron is there any logical explanation how he put himself in a coma and then launched himself as a meteor that rotated middle earth for 500 yrs then magically crashed at a specific time?
Posted on 9/7/22 at 6:59 pm to Magician2
The Sauron theory is dumb. This guy is clearly a wizard.

Why is it impossible to be Gandalf?

Because Gandalf arrived around the year 1,000 of the Third Age and was greeted by Círdan, who gave him one of the three elvish rings, made by Celebrimbor alone, Narya, the Ring of Fire.

quote:only real fit. Some of Tolkien's letters support the blue wizards coming in the Second Age (and they go into the East and South). This fits that time frame, and probably fits the show's emphasis on Men not of the West.
You would think it has to be the blue wizards.
Also, dude is fuzzy-minded, which corresponds to how Gandalf was after he died and then returned in Two Towers. And Gandalf
a) was there very recently, and
b) had time to get his shite sorted out before meeting Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas.
But he still wasn't fully synched with things, took him a moment to remember who he was.
This guy in the show, he's literally just arrived, and also just came over for the first time (at least since the War of Wrath, if he fought then). He might know Quenya, but wouldn't know Sindarin or the Common Speech.

Ben Shapiro reviews the first two episodes of Lord of the Rings
While I take major issue with him comparing this Galadriel to Eowyn (the later who very much earned her glorious ending), he’s correct. Haven’t seen anything beyond the prologue, but really they start with Galadriel with her paper ship? Nothing on the Silmarils, the Oath of Fëanor, the Kinslayings, or the Burning of the Ships? We all assumed that Galadriel in the trailers going over a cliff faces of the Helcaraxë. It’s just nothing. That prologue was total shite and didn’t tell us shite we needed to know. This series is garbage.
And by the way Shapiro highly praised the first few episodes of “House of Dragon” so he’s not biased here since he’s read both series.

We already know that the show isn't exactly following timelines from the books.

So your contention is muted at best

1. Literally no one on earth thinks Ben Shapiro is going to give an unbiased review.
2.
We get that. You said it 45 times. Also, isn’t all that in the Silmarillion and History of Middle Earth? 2 books they don’t have the rights to?

Yeah, he’s a Tolkienite like me. I’m sorry, we will not judge this series unbiasedly. We know what this world is, and you slandering us as racists does not inhibit what we and tens of million of other fans (you are not one of them) know is Tolkien’s vision. He has to live up to the universe and this show is failing miserably.

But I guess a baby Galadriel having her paper boat sunk in Valinor is something to address and of primary importance, something that never happened as far as I'm aware in the books. That's the first thing they show us?
quote:
Yeah, that appropriately sets the tone. If it's Galadriel sailing paper ship, then I'm good on this series.
quote:
I still can't believe Galadriel making a paper ship is the opening scene. I mean, seriously, what?!
quote:
I'm glad the first and most important thing they got to addressing was a paper boat made by Galadriel as a child.
quote:
While I have yet to watch anything beyond the Prologue (nor will I save for scattered clips over the internet), it's even worse than I thought it would be. A paper boat was the first scene in this?

I honestly believe that you only watched that scene.. good lord. Which brings me to…

How would you know if you stopped watching at the prologue?
