I know this movie gets blasted and I see why, it’s cheesy and over the top, dialogue is cringy and it has its flaws.

But I’m sorry it’s a fun movie, I enjoy it and don’t take it too seriously. Sure the plot holes are 5 miles wide and the story isn’t overly complex, but it’s still an exciting movie with a ton of intriguing characters from some of the greatest stories ever told.

Wasn't this the role Connery took over Gandalf for LOTR?

I didn’t know that, that’s hilarious.

I like it.

Yes, he passed on Gandalf.

Sadly, he was so disappointed in this movie he retired from acting.

Yep and I’m glad he did because I can’t imagine anyone else other than McKellan. Stuart Townsend was also cast as Aragorn but replaced with Viggo at the last minute.

It’s a fun movie in the same vein as the Jules Verne movies of the 50’s and 60’s. But as a adaptation of Alan Moore it fails on every level.

Not quite.

IIRC, Connery took the role because he had declined the role for LOTR because he didn't understand the script. Not wanting to make the same mistake twice he jumped on this one.

quote:

A producer of Lord of the Rings has said that Sean Connery turned down the role of Gandalf because he “just didn’t get it”.

The role in Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning fantasy trilogy ultimately went to Ian McKellen.

Speaking to The Independent for part of an extensive oral history ofThe Fellowship of the Ring, to mark the film’s 20th anniversary, McKellen and New Line Cinema executive Mark Ordesky reflected on his casting.

“They only wanted me because the established stars said no,” claimed McKellen. “They wanted Tony Hopkins and Sean Connery.”

“Ian’s being self-deprecating,” said Ordesky in response. “We desperately wanted him.”

He explained: “We did make an offer to Connery but he said no. We never got an answer until years later, but apparently he read the material and just didn’t get it.”

McKellen also recalled how his role as Magneto in the live-action X-Men film nearly cost him a chance at Gandalf due to scheduling conflicts.

He described playing the wizard as “the job of a lifetime”.

As well as McKellen and Ordesky, the retrospective also features interviews with Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Andy Serkis, Dominic Monaghan, John Rhys-Davies and Peter Jackson’s manager Ken Kamins.

Connery's a good actor, but he has no grasp as to what a good or bad script looks like. He pretty much lucked into James Bond; imagine if he had thought that sucked and took on a role for something like, "Journey to the Seventh Planet"?

I always thought no one could play Gandalf better than McKellan, but if Connery really put his all into it, he would have been wonderful.

If he would have played the Istari Wizard like he played Ramirez in Highlander, as a nurturing, guiding, wise and powerful gentle and decent soul, then it would have been phenomenal.

Just imagine this guy LINK in a robe and hat and long beard. Connery, even as an older man, just oozed charisma and screen presence.

The problem for me- I'd see Sean Connery in a Gandalf costume, instead of Gandalf. For roles like that, I much prefer a relative unknown (with talent).

Imagine if Burt Reynolds took the Han Solo role, as offered. I'd see Bandit flying the Falcon.

McKellan was the best to do the role. I love Connery but he would have been too much of a star in that role. No one person had too much Star power in LOTR to steal scenes or shift focus of the movies towards them unnaturally. Putting a superstar in Gandalf’s role would have unbalanced the movie too much IMO

I liked it. No, it wasn't perfect, but few films are. The film was very ambitious, looked good (for the time) and I liked the characters. I thought it was reasonably well cast, to boot.

I don't get the hate, frankly, in light of the shite that Big Hollywood shovels into cinemas today.

I'm also a big fan.

It's fun, cheesy at times, and more importantly doesn't beat you over the head with preachy bullshite like most of Hollywood today.
