I’m sad we’re missing Ellie and Bill interactions with each other as they were so damn entertaining in the game but every change still fits it’s the character and world. It’s still satisfying.

I did not expect the gay version of Pixar’s UP opening. I thought it was excellent episode. Phenomenal acting by Nick Offerman.

Also, no Bloater in the high school gym. Oh well. The next episode in Pittsburgh looks like it might make up for it.

So was the white lotus actor from season 1. Now we have the groundwork of why Joel will go the extra step to protect Ellie. Looking forward to more action next week.

This was the most horrible 60 min of TV I have ever seen...what a way to bomb a TV series after 2 amazing episodes

Honestly, gay sex probably wouldn’t be uncommon in a zombie apocalypse where more men would likely survive than women

But, as you said, the relationship didn’t need a whole hour of screen time.

I thought Bill and Frank were interesting characters, though, and I would’ve liked to see more of them surviving/fighting for their lives.

They’re an entertaining couple.

I could care less about it being a gay relationship. I’d be complaining all the same if it was hetero. You don’t need 60 minutes of backstory on a character that doesn’t even make it to the next episode to give Joel the same drive to protect Ellie. Could’ve been done in a 15 minute flashback if they wanted to explore that. It’s just a waste of screen time.

It does seem bizarre that we have gotten very little Tess and Joel backstory but got an hour of Bill and Frank.

With how much this show has relied on flashbacks, I doubt they're done. This would be one of the last ones I'd imagine. You have to build the new Joel before you compare that with the old one, to show how far he's come along the journey. I imagine they will have another one with his daughter as well, probably when they find his brother (I'm not a game player but I'm assuming that happens)

He would need to fill the whole back of the truck up with gas cans for a cross-country trip. Are there gas stations on the way? Doesn't seem like there's refineries other than what the military has.

I mean, they don’t make it very far in that truck…

That being said I don’t recall getting a ton of info about gas availability. I think there would be enough gas available between other vehicles and gas stations to make it possible (albeit difficult). You don’t need the gas stations to have power, just need a hand pump and a hose.

Which reminds me.. I did enjoy the line about the truck:

“It’s like a spaceship!”

“No, it’s a shitty S-10. But it will get us there. Hopefully.”

It’s some of the reactions to that episode that make you realize why sterile, mindless shlock like Marvel is so successful.

The homosexuality is not really a problem but it was way too long in the episode to not really move the story further. Had 5 minutes of Joel/Ellie and 3 minutes of Joel/Tess to connect it to the overall arc. Could've accomplished that in about 25 minutes of Bill and Frank. I didn't feel connected to their storyline at all and it didn't do anything for the story (for me) rather than show two gay men live in seclusion and OD at the end. Thankfully Bill left a touching note that gives Joel a reason to continue with Ellie. :eyeroll:

OD at the end

That’s what happened to them on the show?? That’s quite the departure from the game, where Frank hates Bill, lives across town, steals Bill’s stuff and hangs himself after getting infected.

Also, this episode taught me that despite being a survivalist, Bill doesn't feel the need to use cover in a fire fight

I wonder how much of,the production budget that virtue signal cost

I imagine it’s the other way around. They likely kept the budget down to next to nothing for this episode so that they could afford the sets and inflated budgets for future episodes.

I bet this was the cheapest episode for them to film, by far.

Not true. It's hinted at, sure. That's it.

The show was always going to have to expand on the backstory of characters at some point.

Fine. Dive into Ellie and give us some reasons why she is so caustic (perhaps how her parents/siblings(?) were lost). Or go into Joel's life just after the death of his daughter and how he goes medieval on the infected - and perhaps even a few of the not-so-infected. Heck they could even dedicate some interesting dystopian time on the government's response and motivations.

Any of those kind of backstory details progress the story and move it along, even though it's events that occurred in the past. Bill was a small, though interesting, part of the journey. Frank was already dead. Their relationship, whatever that might have been, had nothing to do with the story. What a waste of nice opportunity to fill in some intriguing world building.
