I can't accept Terminal at #30. That movie always has me laughing until I cry and I quote it so often too.

Uhm! Let us start with Saving Private Ryan. Certainly in Spielberg's top 5.

You can argue over the order of the top 5, but I don't see how anyone can keep Saving Private Ryan out of there top 5.

Raiders of the Lost Ark at 14 makes this list complete rubbish. I can't read this publication ever again.

I really weep for the future I read stuff like this. You really didn’t get the movie frankly. Part of what makes it great is we don’t see the shark until the 3rd act and the famous though misquoted “you’re gonna need a bigger boat” scene. It’s so much more impactful than some cgi shark ripping people apart like Deep Blue Sea.
The 3 main characters: Brody, Hopper and Quint make Jaws the physical shark is not that important.

West Side Story being ahead of anything is laughable.

Saving Private Ryan

Drunken hot take, make what you want of this, but if SPR had been made by literally any other director, it would've ended up winning the Oscar and would've been way more highly regarded than it currently is.

Spielberg just wasn't the right guy to make that film

My humble top 10 list. My top 4 are solidified, but I had a lot of trouble after my top 4 because they are all so great. I thought I should disqualify sequels even though I love them so much. Thank you Mr. Spielberg, I have so many great memories and experiences going to your movies. You will never be topped in my book.

1. Jaws (1975)
2. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
3. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
4. Saving Private Ryan (1998)
5. Schindler's List (1993)
6. The Color Purple (1985)
7. Jurassic Park (1993)
8. Poltergeist (1983)
9. Minority Report (2002)
10. Empire of the Sun (1987)

that's because speilberg realized that the shark looked so fake that he'd have to use it in very small doses and forced him to completely re imagine how he'd shoot the film. so he resorted to the hitchcock technique of the notion of the shark being more impactful than the actual shark.

jaws was his second feature film, i think speilberg is a better director at 80 than he was at 29 and i think he would probably agree with me.

No it’s because they had mechanical problems with it and it didn’t work well. That accident actually builds the tension more and makes it a better movie. People say it looks “fake” because they know it is. It may not be as good as the Dinos in Jurassic Park but Jaws is a superior film.

Then you’re both wrong
Disclosure Day is getting trashed in pretty much every review I’ve seen. Whata his last great movie? Lincoln, Munich? His stretch from Duel thru SVP is vastly superior to the years since, which is roughly the same amount of years i don’t think that ls really debatable

So many good to great movies. Of course everyone will have a different list. However, the Hollywood Reporter list is terrible, lol.

E.T. is a joke at number one for most, including me. It wouldn't make my top 10. SPR at 21, Raiders at 14, lol.

I have to go with Jaws as number one. Some other favorites are SPR, Munich, Schindler's List, Raiders, Catch me if you can and Jurassic Park, no order.

Gross. No, just no. Not everything needs to be remade, especially the classics. We need less remakes, not more.

That guy's wrong about Spielberg at 80, but you're only looking at a narrow sliver of the internet (here, likely) if you're only seeing negative reactions to Disclosure Day. And Fabelmans and West Side Story are better than several of the films he made in the 80s and 90s (and 2000s), as Spielberg's entire filmography is peppered with clunkers.

1941? Amistad? Always? The Color Purple? The Lost World? Temple of Doom? Hook (yeah)? I know all of these have their defenders, but I'd call two of them absolute garbage (released the same year). Amistad is a piece of dogshite, still his worst film, released the year before SPR.

He's released 6 movies in the past 10 years, and I'd only include BFG and Ready Player One in the clunkers category. The Post is borderline.

Also, the list in OP is obviously ridiculous. And Close Encounters is #1.

Why? There is zero chance the movie could be improved upon. Sure, you could probably have a more realistic shark but You couldn’t top the chemistry that Scheider , Dryfuss, and Shaw had on screen together.
