Funny enough, fast forward 40 years later, and Mad Men becomes a TV sensation with having pretty much every character be terrible people and set in the same era

I think there might be a pattern here

I've railed against anti-heroes and the move towards unlikable characters for a long time, specifically with the idea that "purely good characters" aren't interesting. Hate those arguments.

And I don't think Braddock is good or bad, even though he makes bad choices, he's aimless or lost. He's also annoying, but he's a character searching for his place in the world. For a long time in the film it's not that he does a negative direction, it's that he has no direction. That's certainly part of it.

And for the record, I think Hoffman's performance of that very tension is outstanding.

Not all old movies connect with the audience if they are from a different era.

That's true. I'm working on AFI's list though and I've enjoyed nearly every other movie. I've found some redeeming quality in most of them.

I was going to say, I don't think they are bad characters or unlikeable, just kind of lost. Mrs Robinson was probably born too early. She got knocked up at a time when you had to get married so she is stuck in loveless marriage. Ben is just starting out and doesn't want to settle into a mundane subranite life. Is Peter Gibbons in Office Space "unlikable"? He's kind of an a-hole but he is also stuck in a life/job he finds mundane. I think that is kind of the point of the Graduate, real life can be routine, boring, kind of "plastic".

Last Picture Show was better - but, The Graduate is an immensely influential film - most modern coming of age/generational conflict films trace to this.

I thought Hoffman was too old for the part - and played it too old/mature for the role - but, other than that - the movie deserves relatively high marks and wide recommendations.

he's only like 6-7 years younger than Anne Bancroft in real life.

I'd say bonus to whoever can name her husband, but I'm 100% confident Ace knows

This movie is listed as number 7 movie of all time according to AFI's list. It was on Netflix and I'd never seen it. I just watched it and just don't get the hype. Maybe it's just aged terribly. Or maybe it might be me. But has anyone else seen it? Thoughts?

Agree. Thought it was terrible. The scenes showing his viewpoint through the diving mask were so ham-handed as to be comical.

It was the 60's brah.

The song has something to do with it. Actually, I think the synergy between the movie and the song Mrs. Robinson benefited both.

As always - subjective lists are subjective.

That said, to appreciate The Graduate it helps if you were there or at least have a solid understanding of the times.

Also, the soundtrack alone makes it noteworthy.

Finally, Katherine Ross is one of the all-time movie babes.

i love characters that are bad people

i guess i would compare it to mitch kramer in Dazed and Confused

his character is completely unlikable to me. His face is punchable.

Same with Manny on Modern Family.

It's not about anti-heroes, it's about being whiney I guess

Top ten, all-time? No, but it's one of the best coming-of-age films ever made and is pretty timeless.

This. This movie is the film equivalent of the "Catcher in the Rye" for me.

Last Picture Show - some of the best acting in any film, ever. Ben Johnson's finest performance - probably Leachman and Burstyn's as well. Bogdonavich's first serious film and he never approached it's greatness again.

Omg so overrated. I only watched the whole thing because it's supposed to be one of the best movies ever... I would have turned it off early otherwise.
