Watched both episodes last night. I actually really like it. Mr. Russell came in like a boss at the end of episode 2.

This is really good so far, but I’m a sucker for period pieces.

I am enjoying watching “Gilded Age” (1882) at more or less the same time as the equally good “1883” on Patamount+. What a contrast of American society.

And episode 3 - saw someone recommended this show in the 1883 thread and have not been disappointed.

Does anyone know why Miss. Scott needed to talk to a lawyer?

Same.
I was in love with Carrie Coon in Leftovers. Marriage material right there.
I was glad to see she was in this when I started watching (just 2 episodes in right now), but she just doesn’t feel right for the part.

He did. Mr. Russell did single handedly what took a board of autistic redditors from all over the world.

I could do without the extended scenes given to the homosexual storyline, however. And they had 2 scenes in bed just because, without advancing any story.

white fitted tank top with spaghetti straps...she was ON POINT.

Feels forced here. Don't really buy her as this character. Not as believable as in Leftovers or Fargo.

Best episode so far, and so far about the only character I really feel like rooting for. Apparently he's based on Commodore Vanderbilt. Did some research, his fortune was 200 billion in today's dollars, and his heirssquandered it within 50 years.

These characters just aren't as likeable as the ones in Downton Abbey. Even the "villains" in Downton Abbey (think, Barrow) were likeable/more empathetic in their own way. Of course it's a different tone (and more Oprah/woman oriented) and the stakes never really felt as high as they do in this. And maybe that's the point.

I almost hate to draw comparisons, but given the dialog, the creator, and the obvious one-for-one character substitutes in places, it is inevitable.

This show just keeps getting better. I love the Russell's storyline but the Peggy girl's storyline is pretty dull.

I think my favorite character so far is the bitchy, rich aunt that hates everyone.

He is. In the 1860s some NY aldermen tried to back out on some legislation and short sell stock in Vanderbilt’s company, and Vanderbilt did exactly what Russell did in the last episode. But he showed mercy after the aldermen begged him for it. The very next year, NY state legislators tried the same thing and Vanderbilt was less merciful.

I think I heard somewhere that Russell is also at least partially based on Jay Gould.

So far, this show has been better than I thought it would be. The society parts drag a little for my tastes, but at least it folds into Russell’s business maneuvering. I’m guessing Mrs. Russell is eventually going to tear that one maid into pieces when she gets word that she’s trying to put the moves on her husband.

So far I don't really find much of the help or their story lines that compelling like on Downton Abbey, but the conflict between the uppity new money and stuffy old money has been quite enjoyable.

That butler crossing the street to mindfrick the Russell’s staff was pretty funny.

That was the best part. The contrived scenes with Peggy’s family were ridiculous. It was good to see that Mr. Russell does indeed love his wife. At first I was surprised he didn’t fire the maid on the spot, but I think he saw her ambition and think she will somehow be a useful tool against his and Mrs. Russell’s obstacles.

Lazy day yesterday so I binged and got caught up. They are touching all the bases to try and make everybody happy, but I like it so far. Being a big Carrie Coon fan maybe helps me like it more I don't know. Definitely can tell it's the same person that di Downnton Abbey.

Didn't realize the Marian is Meryl Streep's daughter until a read an article on the show. You can definitely see it once you know that. And my god the Van Rihjn son looks like he could be John Hawkes son...

Yea she was super hot in The Leftovers and wasn't even trying to be. I rewatch that every year. Man that show is so freaking good.

Interesting, I like her. Her and Mr Russell are definitely my favorite characters so far.

I was surprised when they said Stanford White was the architect. I just listened to a podcast on him like a week ago. He was a piece of crap. Basically raped quite a few underage girls. Ended up getting shot in the head by one of the girls husbands.

Really enjoying this show and the character development so far. Coon and Baranski are brilliant in this. Only character I don’t care for so far is Ada.
