Well, it inspired one of the greatest albums of the 90s, so I'll give it a passing grade (even though I had no idea wtf I was watching when I saw it.)

I've never seen it, but I really, really want to. And I'll second that Failure's Fantastic Planet is one of the greatest albums of the last thirty years, although despite the name and the artwork it is actually about heroin addiction and really has nothing to do with the movie.

I hate to say this but I don't think I've ever seen it.

How does it compare on the trippy scale to something like say Heavy Metal?

Never heard of it. Just watched a trailer on youtube. Definitely a lil trippy.

Trippier. Tons of little atmosphere scenes where they show weird things on the planet just to show how weird they can be.

And the style is more in line with Terry Gilliam's Python stuff than anything else.
