Your take is politically correct and uninformed or is that redundant? The Rat Pack threatened to boycott a Vegas casino until it agreed to let its black performers actually stay in their hotel. Frank was a supporter of the civil rights movement. There is a documentary on Netflix you should watch.

Dean and Sammy were both good and masculine men.

They had much more in common than what separated them.

They got along fine and appreciated each other.

I was a young kid watching the Dean Martin Roasts. Holy shite, I laughed till I cried watching Foster Brooks. Those were the days.

I remember the roasts were must see tv as a kid, my dad would laugh so hard that I would end up rolling just watching him, not all my memories of my father are good ones but watching the roasts with him still puts a smile on my face.

Good God almighty the whole point of a roast is to say the most politically incorrect, inappropriate things you would never say in another situation. The roastee knows this is the deal and agrees to it. Did you think ultra liberal Carroll O'Conner was racist when Sammy Davis was on All In The Family and the whole storyline was about Sammy being black and Archie freaking out about it? Lighten up Francis

Frank Sinatra said that. As stated before Dean Martin being drunk was all a act.

Dean said it on the rat pack at the sands album.

I watched it last night after reading this thread. Died laughing.

But I could see how someone who is 20 and never been exposed to that kind of humor before, would think it wasn't cool or think Sammy was being fake. Of course, Sammy made those jokes all the time.

Sorry grandpa. The shite just isn't funny. I'm out. Continue hollering at the clouds

I'm your age or less. Dean Martin would roast your arse for being a humorless and sensitive and Don Rickles would make you cry.

The roasts were largely opportunities for the panel to channel their inner Rickles. So, whatever can be obviously joked about the Guest of Honor is going to be front and center.

And because they were equal opportunity - everyone was roasted with abandon, including Sammy.

Treating him "differently" or with kid gloves would have been racist, IMHO.

Meh. They only worked together for 30 years. Sammy could have been faking it for the paycheck.

He wasn't drunk. He was playing drunk. Like comedian Foster Brooks.

Well Foster Brooks overacted and Dean was fantastic.

The Motts Apple Juice thing makes sense though. Nothing worse than drunk singing. Especially that kind of singing.

That’s the huge problem with the OP and some elements of society overall, everything is based on extremes with zero tolerance.

Amusing how this is the modern liberal mindset but is as restrictive as the 1950’s conservatives if not more.

If you don't find it funny that's one thing. Personally, Im a huge fan of CK, love Tom Segura's latest three shows, got to see Burr in NOLA right before the pandemic broke, etc. I love filthy comics, and one that will say anything knowing that if they make it funny there is nothing off limits. There are tons of comics and tons of styles and not everything is for everyone.

Problem is, that's not the argument you made at first. What you said was:

quote:

I always heard Dean Martin was the king of cool. However, in these roasts, he is quite visibly drunk. But not a "cool drunk", an "unprofessional" sort of drunk. I guess they just rolled old Dean out there and said, "Drink up handsome, you'll do fine." It was sad.

Then the roast. Wow. All the jokes are centered around Sammy being black. How original.

They all took racist shots at him, and Sammy just did his act - fake laughing - the whole time
.

Your issue seemed to be the subject matter was inappropriate. Glorified drinking in a way you don't like, mentioned race in a way you don't like. You came off like a guy that only enjoys alt comedy and finds Hannah Gadsby inspirational.

And then when challenged, dropped the "you guys are triggered" line which is adorable, then just played the "old guys" card as if that was an argument.

Not to mention, if you've spent any time listening to the 200,000 different podcasts done by comedians today ALL THEY DO is bust each other's balls nonstop. A roast that people see is essentially getting a backstage pass to see how cruel comedians are to each other most of the time! They are fricking with each other because that's how they're wired.

In typical 2020 fashion, the guy has taken it upon himself moderndaysplin to Sammy Davis that he should have been offended by the behavior of his "so called" friends.

bullshite. You need to go back to your safe space. It's people like you that has fricked up society. The Youth has created a society that every day you wake up you must look at the news to decide what you have to be offended at. Enjoy the spoils of the PC world your lot have created.
