My favorite of those roasts were Red Buttons routines about who "never got a dinner". Hilarious.

Dean Martin actually drank apple juice. It was a fake drunk for the performances. He was known as a family man. While all the other rat packers were out carousing and cheating on their spouses, Dean was known to stay in after performances.

It's a completely different world out there now. After seeing that, perhaps the world is a better place.

If being humorless makes the world a better place you may be right. You’re off to a great start. Maybe future roasts can be hosted by Trevor Noah.

Then the roast. Wow. All the jokes are centered around Sammy being black. How original.

He was black. And he was Jewish too. Did they not make jokes about that?

Your picture shows up in the dictionary next to snowflake.

This show did not age well at all.

Meh - they were going through a process. Sammy made a ton of money (although he didn't manage it particularly well). The highlight of most roasts was Don Rickles - Don, obviously (and expertly) went after the low hanging fruit and black comics ...to...this...day L-O-V-E Don Rickles. Being insulted by him was an honor.

Your mini-rant (sort of 40 to 50 years later, so dated at that) reminds me of folks getting all up in arms with Jack Benny over his treatment of Rochester.

Long story short - some (probably white liberal) fan wrote and complained about Jack's miserly treatment of Rochester and that he should pay him more and treat him better. Jack, very politely, explained to the fan that Eddie Anderson was not Benny's servant, but an actor playing the character Rochester, that Mr. Anderson was one of, if not the, highest paid colored (approved term at the time) actor in television and actually had paid servants of his own.

One of the nicest, "Are you fricking kidding me?" things ever.

All those guys on the dais knew each other well. They were old Hollywood and tv stars who worked together A LOT because there were only 3 tv networks instead of 400.

Replying to an old post here, but that's a great point. Watching interviews with old actors and performers, it's always amazing how many of them knew each other or how well they knew each other. But you're right; there were fewer networks and fewer studios. And live entertainers tended to work the same club circuits and vegas rooms.

You're wrong on everything you said! Dean played a character. He only acted drunk. It is fact. You have the right to not like his character. But his character was endearing to ALL of his fans. The racism, however was evident. But at that time, it was also an act. It was comedy, it was planned. If you knew anything about Dean Martin you would know he would never stand for any hatred towards Sammy or ANYONE in his circle of friends that were black. He boycotted the inauguration of Kennedy because he didn't invite Sammy. Sammy was married to a whit woman. That didn't look good for Kennedy. Dean stood by his friends side and didn't go.

Rickles, Berle and many other white comedians and actors said many things towards Sammy, Nipsy, Redd, Wilt, Mohammad Ali and others. But they took cracks at Jeeish peopl,

White people taking shots at black people in humor and vice versa would actually be a good sign of mutual acceptance and understanding. It's wild how many don't understand that

Your post is awful, and you obviously have no clue about what the folks on that dais, including Dean, did to fight for Sammy.

Not sure, but I do kind of enjoy them when it's a thread I knew I posted in, and when I go back and reread what I wrote I still 100% agree.

They were a very tight group. Sammy said Dean was his best friend and Frank was his brother. They stuck their neck out repeatedly to make sure Sammy got treated and paid just like them and he loved them for it. If you fricked with Sammy, Frank would have you mysteriously disappear.
