A few of them are up on Amazon Prime for viewing. Sheesh...

I picked the Sammy Davis Jr. roast out of the blue.

I always heard Dean Martin was the king of cool. However, in these roasts, he is quite visibly drunk. But not a "cool drunk", an "unprofessional" sort of drunk. I guess they just rolled old Dean out there and said, "Drink up handsome, you'll do fine." It was sad.

Then the roast. Wow. All the jokes are centered around Sammy being black. How original.

They all took racist shots at him, and Sammy just did his act - fake laughing - the whole time.

I am not a PC person at all. This show did not age well at all. It's a completely different world out there now. After seeing that, perhaps the world is a better place. That was just awful.

Edit 4/4/2022 - This thread gets bumped once a year out of the blue, so I thought I'd make this comment in the original post rather than on page 7.

After posting, I educated myself on Frank, Dean, and the rest of the Rat Pack. I had no idea how much impact they had on improving race relations at the time. Especially Sinatra. While I still may not find the jokes funny, I can appreciate that the men loved Sammy, and they hadn't intended to harm or belittle him.

It's true. I don't think comedy should have rules. It's better when comics are allowed to push the limits. This was just low effort and sad - by today's standards.

They should've centered the jokes around his losing that eye in the car accident.

Just don't talk about someone being black.

I agree with you about the excessive drinking part. Sad what it does to people.

You could actually enjoy life back then and not be called racist for any reason. Life was simpler and more enjoyable and less riots and looting and hating of whitie.

Maybe he was inwardly offended by their jokes - I don't know, I wasn't him - but I don't think he would have hung around with Dean Martin for all those years if he knew Martin was a racist.

Drunk Dean Martin was awesome.

“No seriously, in all seriousness, I feel sorry for you people that don’t drink. When you get up in the morning, that’s the best you’re gonna feel all day.”

Him coming out on stage for the opening of his show with a drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other was fantastic.

“Frank and I were hanging out in my living room, swimming. And he made himself a peculiar drink. I looked down at him...and he looked down at me...I said ‘whatchu making there?’ He said scotch and carrot juice.”

Him dressing up as a priest and trying to pick up women in a bar was hilarious...

“Father, what are you saying?!”

“Hmpphh...didn’t you ever see Thornbirds?”

The racist jokes were a part of their stage act. Dean carrying Sammy around and calling him his NAACP Award, putting a tablecloth over his head like a klansman... Sammy caught shite from the black community for it.

That's a naive statement. Sammy took the abuse because he got paid a lot of money to do it. He laughed all the way to the bank.

They probably made some jokes to each other off stage too. But there was no malice in them. Today it’s racist, period. They probably considered it good natured ribbing. They just weren’t as offended, especially given their long friendship. I’m pretty sure Sammy gave as good as he got too.

Today you see little bits of this humor pop in places like Family Guy or Chappelle or South Park. But it’s almost stamped out in the cultural mainstream.

I think their relationship was more deep and complex than that.

Eh!

Snapshot in time.

No way a celeb the caliber of Dean at that time would be allowed on TV that shitfaced today, and of course the jokes would cause the world to burn.

If you're easily offended, you won't want to search out the audio recordings of the actual Friar's Roasts from the 60's. They were awesomely mean-spirited and they fricking tore into each other.

No, that's why he converted to Judaism.
