I was disappointed for a couple of reasons.
Playing all of this out in one episode, so early in the season, severely disrupted the flow of the show. Chandler’s appearance at the end just highlighted how needed his performance is.
And I hate when writers insist on retconning the origins of superheroes to give them a new, tragic past. Barry Allen can’t just be a normal, good man given superpowers, he has to have a murdered parent. Hal isn’t a test pilot because he’s fearless, it’s because he watched his father die. And now John Stewart is the product of abusive parents. Writers using “what ifs” to put their name as a new “creator” of a character.

They had to figure out some way for John to be dishonorably discharged without cause. Of course top level white men in the military talk about top secret stuff like this in public. That totally tracks if you just assume all white people are bad and go from there.

It’s another in a long line of straw men these people create in some weird attempt to fool themselves into thinking they can control what people say on the board. Lindelof is polarizing on the board but he's one of the best in the business imo but I'm pretty disappointed he gave free reign to this chick to let her write this black girl fantasy wet dream episode.
The point about where he is dropped off tells you she doesn't need to be writing an episode about the black struggle when that contradicts the whole point she is trying to make. She went hard on white privelege and the black struggle but couldn't come up with a better place for him to overcome fear than... the gjetto with a bunch of black people on the street? Come on.
Frustrating to me because I thought the episode was really strong if you took out the message. Like there is nothing wrong with a dad having fear for his family when an alien pops in in the middle of the night but why is that Hal's fault and why does Hal have no fear simply because he's white? Was the guardian dressed up as a normal looking white person when they tested him and that's what he was afraid of? I legitimately don't know.
The writer even took her shots at the guardian in human form. The mom gets her "Other than you being an unfortunate looking white lady" shot in in the driveway. She just a normal looking older white lady, why is she unfortunate looking?
it's like the writer was just getting as many shots in as possible. White people got pissed at the Watchmen from the get go because of the Tulsa episode but people didn't realize there actually was a Tulsa massacre. This just seemed like race bait at times. I will forever love Lindelof because The Leftovers is the greatest show ever but disappointed he let such a poorly written white privilege episode go that hard.
Though the Outkast soundrack was legit.

I'm young enough where John Stewart was pretty much "my" green lantern growing up. I watched the crap out of all the justice league cartoons. I don't mind the unique take on his origins and even his dad being tested, but all the other crap about Hal Jordan and the heavy-handed quadrupling down of the divisive narratives is so disappointing and unnecessary to the plot. Come to think of it, so was the dead alien's dangling member last episode.
Making Hal Jordan out to be a complete POS is shameful.

If you're disappointed that implies you didn't expect it. A lot of people predicted exactly what he would do and they turned out to be correct, so what did they know that you didn't?

It's Lindelof, the guy that did the Watchmen, i knew it could go there. I also knew he could stay away from it because he has done that to. Hence the disappointment.
