It's not the first time Lindelof has done this. He uses black women to promote an anti-white message while pushing black men to the sidelines. He did the same thing in The Watchmen. Regina King was the competent hero. Her husband was completely silent. The black cop in that show was a boy toy for a gay white supremacist.

This could have been a strong episode if the writer wasn't trying to inject her persecutory fantasy into it along with her bizarre need to over-compensate John for it. He's already an elite sniper, ridiculously fearless, pretty much a master artist but now he also has to be the fricking José Salvador Alvarenga of the Russian wilderness?
Someone needs to clue the writer in on the phrase "less is more".

It’s a mystery box filler episode, they always suck. Idiots like Lindelof can’t build character into their stories so they use full episodes to try and get you to like the protagonist. A good writer doesn’t need to do this, you buy into the character’s traits as the story progresses. He shouldn’t have to tell you why you should like his protagonist.

Yeah, I gave the show the benefit of the doubt with thinking that the diner conversation was mostly harmless banter. Episode three wasted no time telling me "but wait, that was just the appetizer." Lindelof is only able to tell stories about black people if there involves a victimhood narrative. He beats his audience over the head with cliche after cliche of black oppression and white superiority. It's a Hollywood thing as much as it is a Lindelof thing. It's like they can't comprehend that actual, normal black people exist in the world outside of their liberal bubbles.

That diner scene was a woke wet dream. I laughed my arse off at how obvious it was and got nothing but downvoted for clowning on it. And then they went and TOTALLY outdid themselves with this gem of an episode. This is Gunn trying to get DC their “Black Panther.”
