It's both detrimental to the show and the world at large to keep stirring this stuff up.

It's also an extremely lazy writing trope that black drama characters can't be written without referencing perceived racism as their biggest "struggle" (see Jordan Peele).

Man that could have been a bad arse episode if the white privilege and being black is so much harder stuff throughout the episode. On it's own it was a very good origin episode but the motive and attitude of the mom was just tiresome.

John's story himself without his mom was freaking great television but man they were preaching. The black girl writer after the show basically said she wanted to preach.

Unless they are just trying to make her the villain. What was the privilege Hal had that didn't cause him to have any fear? How would she know he hasn't had any reason in his life to have fear? Simply because he was white I guess.

I did laugh when Linney said, "Black? You mean brown skin" lol
