wtf was episode 3? Trash. Between this and House of the Dragon, Sundays have really sucked on HBO for a while now.

Giving the show the benefit of the doubt;
You're overlooking the point that this is all in-universe, it's apparently the driving fear of mama, who was used to train (groom?) John.
And don't forget, John watched Hal's interview in Ep 1 as a kid. He knows why Hal is without fear, and it isn't white privilege.
I think they're laying it on thick, and coincidentally had it laid on thick in Ep 2, to have it be manipulation of fears. And John probably picked up on dude's wife using the same race-baiting on him that worked on mama... the woman who casually knew a bit too much about the ring.
I'm speculating that the Guardian is either Parallax or working for it, and that quite possibly she's slept with John in a different shape. To keep fricking with his mind for... whatever. Destroy the Corps, which always seems to the goal.
But John may be on to her.

And again, I don't think the way she looked and acted was an accident. We're supposed to dislike her.
And also- I mentioned the opening logo with "Lanterns" was yellow, more than green. I picked up on that and watched, everything "green" in the show, including in this episode, is definitely green. It wasn't accidental, you don't make that mistake in a Green Lantern story. It's supposed to let you know something isn't right.
The mom discusses it at length with the Guardian, because that was her opening. She coyly plays it... "Black? You mean... brown?"
I think it's being laid on thick, because it's supposed to be seen (and remembered when the plot opens later in the season). Whitey, the white man, privilege, etc.
John gets prompted with it in Ep 2 to apparently make him mistrust Hal, now we see mama was eaten up with it. I cringed when they first did it, but after tonight it started getting obvious (at least to me) that it was a misdirection; they showed mama as fricking crazy right afterwards. Pushing dad to shoot the apple, pushing him out into the streets, isolating him from his brothers etc.
I think if they were pushing that message, they portray mama as a wonderful "strong black woman" instead of a crazy bitch. And young John doesn't say "no, YOU" with that look, when he's ready to shoot the apple of a parent's head.
Yeah, they do humanize her later. But I think that's supposed to be overcoming fear (or being human), more than to give her earlier actions support. She meant well, she just had fears... that were played upon and used.
The Guardian, I believe, assumes the same triggers and distrust were instilled into John, and tries to control him that way.

John has some issues, too
We learn he's vegan because he hates cheeseburgers, which he got every time dad shoots an apple off his head. He tells Earl he used to love burgers, so I'm going with he associates cheeseburgers (meat) with that event. He tells mom he hates cheeseburgers.
We also get "the birds are watching", so it wasn't "just a bird" last episode.
Out of curiosity, was that even really "his" bird, or was it maybe the Guardian's? Just to further confuse and frick with his head, trying to trigger childhood issues? Maybe even to spy on him? It's canon that the guardians can make much more durable constructs, which addresses the issue in multiple ways: the "red lanterns" were curious how Hal was maintaining it so far away (and unknown to them, Hal's ring is out of power). John assumes (as do we) that it is him but doesn't seem to know how or why; which is stretching canon.
Hal wonders about it, too.
But a guardian could do that. And we get the same race-baiting with the guardian and the rancher's wife, so there's some similarities there. Along with, both characters apparently seem to manipulate people's insecurities and fears. Pushed mama's buttons, pushed dad's too (set him up to go along with this by the initial rejection), and now casually cheats on an extremely controlling dude who has some wealth and paranoia. And he knows, or suspects... eating off another man's plate.
I guess we need to see if the dude's wife knows something more, and "a little birdie" told her.

That episode was hot garbage. It took three episodes for them to whip out the "it's so hard being black" trauma that Hollywood loves. Even if you're a super hero you're oppressed. Should call this crap One Lantern After Another.
