Literally the only thing truly original that has come about in the last 15 years is "reality" TV's complete takeover of cable. We went from Cheers, The Cosby Show, Seinfeld, and Friends in the 80s and 90s to Teen Mom, Jersey Shore, and Here Comes the Honey Boo Boo nowadays. How did it get so bad so quickly?

Firefly
Arrested Development
South Park
Game of Thrones
The Walking Dead
The Americans
Mad Men
The Wire
Lost
Breaking Bad
Modern Family

TV of the aughts and now isn't that bad.

Plus you have a lot more choices.

In fairness to the last decade and a half you can still find a handful of quality shows amongst the sea of garbage. The CSI franchise and South Park are high quality modern shows along with some of what you mentioned. In sheer number there are more good shows now than in the 80s but that's because there are 20 times as many shows on TV now.

Wouldn't of minded being born 15-20 years earlier.

The 80's really were amazing. American Patriotism seemed to be at a modern all-time high then (excluding world wars) IMO.

Reagan + Stallone =

The Russians didn't stand a chance.

The 90s were a miserable decade. The music and the styles were shite. Hell the 90s make the 70s look good.

And the 2000s were even worse. They made the 90s look like the 60s. Seriously, the 2000s might be one of the worst decades in American history. Just awful.

Great series but the I Love the 80s special on VH1 was a lot better.

There were some good things in the 80's no doubt. However, that decade produced what are probably the worst clothes and hairstyles in American history.

Best American post-WWII (not perfect but pretty interesting and fun overall0:

1966-75
1980-85
1992-97
2008-

We're in a golden age of dramatic television. If you think the 80's had anything on Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and Walking Dead... you're high.

And that's just one network. Throw in HBO, Showtime, FX...

Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere just don't stack up.

9) ESPN
10) HBO

Terrible list. Most of what you're providing had their impetus before the 80's.

People were sheep in the 80's, just like they were in the 50's. Hair & fashion bear that out.

Reagan saw it and took advantage of it.

Look at what the great changes in the 80's (deregulation military build up, etc.) have sown.

The internet was around before the 1980's just not in the form you see today. The TCP/IP was standardized in 1982.

VCR have been around since the 1960's RCA really lost out on that one, selling it to Sony for 25k in the early 60's.

Video games started in the 70's.

Cell Phones were also the 1970's.

Cable TV has been around since the late 1940's.

Documentary have been produced since before the 1950's.

Espn 1979.

HBO 1965

etc.

The 80's were not as good as the 70's or 60's....
Todays world is more of a product of the 1960's than the 1980's.

Most of the world power brokers today grow up in the late 50's and the 1960's. A few like President Obama are 60's and 70's.

A lot of it but not all.

The Joshua Tree
License to Ill
Pretty Hate Machine
Appetite for Destruction
The Replacements
London Calling
etc.

But yeah, a lot of it sucked. But mainly the hair and fashion was god awful.
