Seriously, the 2000s might be one of the worst decades in American history. Just awful.

One area I will readily admit that the 80s was awful in was fashion and hairstyles. The straighter hair look on girls in the 70s and 90s was much more attractive.

I think ones age in a decade makes a big difference in how people perceive a decade. Most people will naturally have fond memories of their childhood. I just happen to think the 80s was a wonderful time to go though as a grade school age kid. I can see where people high school aged and older at the time may have found it lame especially if they experienced the 60s and early 70s. When I speak highly of the 80s it's more in relation to the late 90s till now which is one of the worst eras in modern history in so many ways. TV now does have some great original programming nowadays so there is some quality out there. However, TV is so dominated by a sea of trashy "reality" tv that it brings down tv as a whole. The 80s had just enough technology for good video games, modern comforts, bit not so much that kids couldn't still be kids and do stuff outdoors. People weren't anywhere near as fat and out of shape back then either. The 80s weren't as great as the 60s or early 70s they were way better than the last 15 years.

I will admit that receiving my first Social Security check in the 80's was kind of cool.

Traditional network television is pretty pathetic, but that's such a small part of television options today. I think there's more creativity and interesting viewing options than ever. In spite of the horrible reality shows of which there are, admittedly too many.

They're re-running this series on Nat Geo right now in case anyone is interested.

As for teen pregnancy and crime somehow being worse then compared to the somehow gloriously safe wholesome society we have nowadays to some, it was a great decade to be a kid. We had a strong economy and competent president then and not constant bad news like we've had the last 13 years. Working hard and making money in a free market economy wasn't considered evil like it is nowadays. There was hope and optimism instead of anxiety and pessimism. Congress actually comprised and got things done unlike today.

I LOVE these threads. They're just full of people so desperate to prove that their particular nostalgic decade of choice was the epitome of pop culture, and that no decade since can ever produce the same quality. If time could stand still, they still wouldn't happy.
