SUPERMAN’ flies past ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ with $13M on Monday

The biggest non-holiday Monday of the year at the Domestic Box Office!

Good reviews and word of mouth kicking in? May have legs enough to make up for poor overseas box office.

I think I figured out what it is. The difference between Cvill and Corenswet. Cornenswet just does not look as bad as as Cavill. It’s just the way it is lol. He looks more puppy dog ish. And acts more so. It’s the way the character is written. Like, I could not imagine Corenswet doing that scene where he kills Batman in the dream sequence.

I don’t know who would win in a fight. JL Cavill would win for sure. But MoS versus Corenswet I don’t know.

The big test will be how it does compared to fantastic four. and if it can continue to have a little bit of legs during that run. This is a big event movie for Marvel so they’re also watching things closely. They do not want to lose to a DC movie with one of their big event movies.

Have no clue how it's legs will do, but F4 presales are very good. It's going to open higher than Superman in both domestic and international markets

Yeah, the only chance it’ll have is if fantastic four sucks. Which, I don’t really want that either because I want both to do well lol. Superman will be fine though either way. Unless it does under 500 million.

The movie had so much hype and goodwill going for it. It failed on all sorts of fronts though.

One of the biggest flaws was that they dropped the viewers into an already established universe. We all know that Lex and Superman are rivals, but the direct jump into things like giant aliens, talk of intergalactic zoos, the Justice Le... errr.... Gang knowing Superman well enough to know his secret identity, the Superman robots, etc. came across as starting a race by going instantly from 0 to 60. On top of that, Gunn did this in a mesh of villain styles from multiple eras, which gave the movie a jerky visual at times.

This carried over to the plot a bit as well. The public was FAR too quick (even with Lex's monkeys, which was a funny dig at trolls and troll farms) to turn on Superman. Mary Sue'ing Jimmy into being a magnet for hot chicks was as bad in this movie as it has been when they've done it with the husband in Ghosts.

And then we get to Krypto...

We finally get Krypto in a Superman movie and they make him a bit of a menace? Superman is actually dickish to him in the beginning, being standoffish and dismissive after he saves Superman's life. That didn't work. At all. And then we find out that he's really Kara's dog, he's just been dog-sitting for her and she's some sort of intergalactic party-chick? Again, the world being so fleshed out without the viewer didn't work. At all. There was no "ah-hah" moment at the end (which I can only guess Gunn was going for), just a "wtf" moment.

Speaking of WTFs, there were also some big misses with characters which really screwed the movie. The two biggest were Ma and Pa Kent. At no point in any of the Superman stories I've ever read (I haven't read them all, but I've read many) have they been written and acted as an old, doddering, Southern, redneck couple. This was casting Will Smith as James Bond bad. Wrong people, wrong style, wrong everything.

To add to it, at the end when they showed the montage of Clark as a child they didn't even hire a younger actor and actress who somewhat look like the older parents, they just put some darker hair dye on them and it looked like crap.

Lex was so obsessed with defeating Superman he was willing to destroy Metropolis? No. He cries when he gets defeated? Aw, hellllll naw.

The music choices were absolute crap, except for the Superman theme.

Fillion's Guy Gardner was good but they completely didn't do any green aura when he used his power.
Mr. Terrific and Hawkgirl were done well, except for Hawkgirl's ridiculous screeching. Seriously, who thought that was a good idea?

I had high hopes for this and I *might* watch it when it goes to HBOMaxGoUltraWhatevertheyarecallingittoday, but I won't see it in the theater again.

Cooper just felt out of place

I liked the casting of Bradley Cooper. And he’s also a Philly guy like Corenswet, which makes for an interesting connection. At first, I thought Supes’ mom was Lady Gaga but later in the film when a longer clip of the recording appears I realized it was the girl from Westworld.

Wish I could find a clip online of the Peacemaker cameo. The audience in the theater was laughing so loudly I couldn’t hear all of his dialogue.

I didn't really have much problem with this, we didn't really need an origin story same with Spiderman Homecoming. We know the basic story and we know who the Justice League or I guess gang is.

I kinda agree with this I think to make it more realistic he should have had some hardcore Superman fans who were standing by him regardless or conspiracy theorists who believed the video was faked

Mary Sue'ing Jimmy into being a magnet for hot chicks

Don't think that's making him a Mary Sue also pretty sure the only girl obsessed with him was Lex's girl who was obviously super clingy which probably has to do with being around Lex all the time
quote:

I mean that has more to do with Kara not being a great owner and Clark kind of not wanting to dog sit

she's some sort of intergalactic party-chick?

I never read any Supergirl comics but I do know this is a reference to the Woman of Tomorrow comic where she's also an alcoholic which I'm pretty sure is what's being adapted in the Supergirl movie

Hard disagree there Gunn always delivers on the soundtrack

Agree with the crying part

We're supposed to be talking about the quintessential evil genius with no superpowers but genius and preternatural determination. Having him cry was well, a bitch move.

Having pocket universe access with access to aliens and other technology also made the idea of carving off a slice of some random country pretty small time compared to other potential aspirations.

I loved the look of Hoult as Lex but they damaged his character and could have done better. Especially given the pocket universe stuff he should have had a good exit planned.

You totally whiffed on Lex's motivation.

Was he crying because he got defeated?

Or was he so angry at that point that his anger caused him to cry? If that makes sense. Not crying out of sadness at being defeated, but becoming so angry that he started crying?

Let's have a better conversation then.

Why do you think the wielding of overt power (with a foreign country partitioned and renamed) was the right big picture move to further his ambitions?

One reason would be, you force Superman to intervene thereby making him an enemy of the state, thereby giving Lex the authority to go after him. That’s what he was trying to do. Get the United States and the American people against him. If he just kills Superman without the support of the people, Lex appears as the villain. It’s 4d chess.

Lex Luthor uses Boravia as a pawn in his larger scheme to discredit and ultimately defeat Superman. He convinces the Boravian leader that he wants the country for real estate, playing on a classic Luthor trope. However, this is a ruse. Luthor's true goal is to infiltrate Superman's Fortress of Solitude and find something he can use to turn public opinion against the hero. The "Hammer of Boravia" attack is a distraction to achieve this.

Yeah there’s tons of reasons. Forcing Superman to intervene in a war makes him appear political and choosing a side. Thereby pissing the American government off. That’s what the entire interview with Louis was about. Not sure how anyone missed that.

Right

I understand all of that. But the part that didn't fit was the selfie reveal of the map with Lex's name on part of the country.

The staged conflict was logical and fit his motives.

The carving off part of what appears to be a small third world country and renaming it was a small time ego move bearing no relationship to distracting Superman and sneaking into his Fortress.

There's also the ex girlfriends disposal into pocket universe bits. That was silly (unnecessary compared to other methods of disposal) and small time petty when you're dealing with a man who probably doesn't even have to date to have his sexual or other desires satisfied
