Subtitles

I’m curious. What’s the big objection to movies with subtitles? They’re so much better than those phony-sounding dubbed voice tracks. It’s always better in the original language with an actor’s actual voice.

agreed. honestly, if you listen to a dubbed movie/tv show instead of reading subtitles you're dead to me. only exception being the old 70's martial arts movies.

I watch subtitles with everything.
Started with Game of Thrones to learn characters and got hooked.

Subtitles are far superior to dubbed audio, and I'll even add that I use subtitles for some English language films and shows. British stuff like Peaky Blinders and these modern films that tend to include a lot of low mumbling dialogue. Makes them a lot easier to follow.

I found complete cultural immersion to be the best way to learn it.

I'd watch movies with my Dad who was hard of hearing and we used subtitles for everything.
Eventually, I just got used to it and it almost became a crutch.
You don't miss anything and it really doesn't distract.
Some movies have that awful volume disparity where the dialogue is super soft and the action scenes are incredibly loud.
You also need it for narrated movies, British or Irish movies.
The only movies I'd want dubbed is old Italian movies. The subtitles last about 2 seconds on the screen because the actors talk so fast...you can't follow some of it.

I never watched dubbed versions of live action movies.
With anime I will watch the dubbed version sometimes.

Several of the top 20 movies I've seen have subtitles. People avoiding these movies because they have to read a little are missing out on some true masterpieces.

I have to watch anime in English. Tried watching Attack on Titan in Japanese and just couldn't do it. I watch live movies in the original language.

because my 3yo is too close to our main TV room and i will literally miss 75% of the dialog without it.

This. I got sick of having to turn the TV up to hear the actors while having to turn it right back down b/c the music or sound effects start blasting the frick out of my speakers.
I don't know how or why sound mixing got so bad but it's pretty much impossible for me to watch many a modern movie or tv show at night in bed with the wife b/c of how fricking loud everything sans the dialogue has become.
The only time it occasionally kind of sucks to have the subtitles up is if you are watching a comedy and you read the punchline to a joke before the visual cue hits.

Protip: A lot of times it's your tv not the mixing.
Newer tv's come with whatever their special version of fake surround sound is as the default output.
Go in to your tv audio settings and change the output from "Dolby" or "Surround Sound" or whatever your tv manufacturer calls it to just plain Stereo.

I've done that. It's not the tv. It's shitty sound mixing.

This was my situation growing up as well. My mom is hard of hearing and my dad was completely deaf. I grew up just being used to them. Strangely enough my brother hates them. The other benefits have already been stated in this thread.

This.
Attack on Titan dubbed is far better than the subbed IMO

This is so true. This is why I watch almost everything with subtitles. There's too much background noise at my house with my toddler running around.

it takes your focus off of the action

I had a Deaf relative live with me for 5 years so I am accustomed to closed captioning all the time.
I actually prefer it for anything other than sports.
You miss a lot of shite that simply goes unheard.

And Miyazaki films. Those I preferred dubbed because they do a good job and the subtitles distract from the animation.
