Our biggest concern was quelled when they showed Chun Li's beautiful gams in that trailer.

I think them buying into the campiness will make this a stellar adaptation.

When movies about video games try to take themselves too serious they end up not being very good

Apparently the actress is typically very thin; she worked hard to get the "Chun-Li' thighs.

Really? I think it looks great.

They realized that you have to scrap trying to make a serious movie and lean WAY into the cheesy shite and just make it fun. This has the potential to be really awesome IMO.

It looks like they are taking the Mario approach, and they absolutely should. Just fill the movie with parts that make the audience go "Oh, I remember that from the game". The trailer was packed with them; hadoukens, Ryu and Ken seeming like brothers but not being sure how that works, Honda's chops, Ryu's hurricane kick, fighting in the bathroom, etc.

Video game movies are tricky beasts, and it's no surprise that it's been hard for Hollywood to figure them out.

Some would be better leaning into the campiness...like Mario. I agree that a fan-service/nostalgia approach to SF will be a lot better than the turd we got in 1994. There's just not enough plot in SF to work from, so if you try to make something up, it's just going to be forced and clunky.

However, other video game movies definitely warrant a more serious approach...Legend of Zelda being a good example. If they ever made a Metroid movie, that would be another excellent example.

After thinking about it, I would say the general rule should be...the less plot a video game has, the more its movie should lean into the campiness.

These trailers look awesome. They seemed to have nailed the spirit of the video game

Just be true to the tone of the video game.

Street Fighter was always in the campy, early 90s, bright colors, acid washed jeans and trapper keepers vibe.

Zelda originated will always be in the fairy tale action adventure genre and a movie should be the same.
