Gotta remember leading up the Mindflayer.
It had shown itself to be smart and petty. So it had Will lead the soldiers into the demodog ambush then used their lines to guide them the rest of the way.
Because they hurt just a small part of him.
Then El shuts down the portal and it's personal and he's shown hunting her.
The OG demogorgon is able to open small rips because the veil is weakened around the portal and El accidentally showed it the way.

I've gotta watch season 2 again. Probably should have before watching 3.

So it seems that one can travel through the Upside Down through portals to get from one side of the Earth to the other. A fact that makes sense as it's a parallel universe so anything in that universe should be able to navigate through it.
My guess would be that once this is discovered/realized (Russians in America, an American in the Russian "prison", knowledge of the workings related to the Upside Down in both places), coupled with easing tensions between the two countries as the 80s wore on, season 4 (if it's the last) would consist of the US, USSR, and the rest of the world possibly, teaming to destroy the UD? Anyone buying that?
If those are plot points going forward, it makes the most sense for "the American" to be Brenner. Or, could Brenner be an informant for the Russians and "the American" referred to at the end of the finale still be Hopper, and we get them both back next season?

I figure the US isn’t gonna be too pleased Russia had that going on underneath their noses That’s why I said a few pages back I wonder what happens to them..
But yea, even GI Joe and Cobra had to team up to defeat the crazy gamesmaster dude.

I have a feeling Brenner has to show back up at some point. He’s alive according to the Duffer brothers and it’s interesting he didn’t play a factor this season. I’m willing to bet he’s the endgame villain for next season somehow.

finished season 3 last night
what a ride.
Still processing it all but I really really enjoyed it.
And I'm sure it's been said but that Hopper letter, whoa.

That's because it was completely forced to get some gay in the show.

I want to believe he’s dead but there’s too much smoke that he isn’t, same as Hopper.

On Episode 4 right now. Why can't these people seem to connect past events together to see something is wrong?

Yeah, that is one "problem" I had with the show. The only one eager to jump to conclusions is Joyce, but she's always been the nutty mom. Nancy and Jonathon were very slow and unworried about those rats acting fricked up initially.
After two straight years of fricked up, other-worldly shite, the whole group's first thought when things started getting weird should have been "it's happening again!"

I’m not gonna lie, I just finished this yesterday, and looking at the comments, I’m surprised it’s being received so positively.

As a member of the Harrington army.... I'm glad they gave him another opportunity to be a good guy.
He has always been a good guy. His only fault was that in season 1 he was operating in a 80s teen romcom and not a 80s si-fi movie.

The kids wanted to wake up at 3am on the release and watch. So my mind is a little fuzzy.
I thought it was better than Season 2.
The only weak bits of writing were the conversion of Billy.
He was the biggest a-hole in Hawkins. And becomes the 2nd biggest villain in S3.
But an El with no superpowers touches his face and says "dress" and "flowers" etc.. and all of a sudden, he's the reason El and the brat pack don't die?
I'm actually surprised that he wasn't eating toxins and turned to goo inside like all of the other flayed (thus not even being anything other than Billy's empty skin).
That said, his death scene was as good as Bob's.
I'm looking forward to season iv.
I predict the science teacher takes a bigger role.
The American is one of El's family members.
And Will gets laid (hope it's with a girl).

So a few things:
Definitely the entire season was an homage to 80s action movies. I really enjoyed it.
While I want Hopper to be alive sooooo bad, I think they are going to have it be a different American in there, because everyone just expects it to be Hopper.
Was the implication early in the season that Will is gay?
How old are Jonathan and Nancy supposed to be again? I thought maybe they had graduated HS, but I guess they were in the Summer between Jr and Sr year? I really couldn't recall, because I was thinking "Why would Jonathan leave town too if he's out of HS?"
So the biggest thing:
They have to totally shift the paradigm next season right? They can't keep focusing just on the kids and Hawkins. Its gotten too big and out of hand, and several of the main characters don't live in Hawkins anymore. So you have to imagine that Season 4 will be a fairly drastic shift in storyline and setting, right?

Mike said, "it isn't my fault that you don't like girls" which can be taken several ways.
But this is netflix in 2019. We all know the code.

They’ve sorta been hinting at it all show
His dad would call him fairy or whatever in season one
And the mom and brother were like yeah he’s “different”

In the episode from S2 that everybody hated, the guy that El and her “sister” are about to kill tells them that Brenner is still alive, and he can tell them where to find him. He obviously didn’t know about the events on S1, so he may have thought that Brenner was still alive in Hawkins, or he may have just been talking trying to save himself, or he possibly could have known somehow that the Russians had him. Either way, it’s something that points to the possibility of him being alive.
I buy the theory that Brenner is the American, and that Hopper is in the upside down. They obviously want everyone to think that the American is Hopper, and when they reveal that it isn’t it’ll be a gut punch, only to reveal later on that Hopper is still around too.
