I think They’ve done a good job connecting it all to El and Hawkins.

When the Russians opened the way was when the dust exorcised from Will went active again.
So it's not dead on the right side unless they burned it to ash and encased it in cement for good measure then put that in a titanium box. Then more cement...then lead.
The real sin is forgetting the Mindflayer could already see El from the upside down and then pretending BillyFlayed and Parasite Eve monster were scouting for her.
