They should have just called it Episode 4: A New Hope (for better special effects).
It was the same plot almost the whole way around.
The falcon is junk and hasn't run in years, but can still out-maneuver tie fighters.
Force-capable beings are on a desert planet and end up meeting an old man in a white robe and cloak.
The main villain wears a mask and has a robot voice.
The son of a force-capable person has turned to the other side.
There's a giant planet killing machine that literally causes the death of stars, but wait, it has an unguarded weakness that we need to fly through a trench to reach.
Jar Jar Abrams really screwed this one up.
I have issues with the movie as well:

BUT, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt it terms of the direction they went in. For this first Disney Star Wars movie they HAD to get people back on board and to forget the prequels.

One of my favorite parts, I let out a huge "Let's do this shite" I was pumped. And then when Luke appeared I said "Hell Yes" I had a pretty cool theater. Laughed when they needed to, no phones, everyone was into it from the get go and didn't wanna miss a second. There were some red eyes after it let out but also huge smiling faces. Just an unbelievable experience. Wouldn't trade it for the world.
Sounds like my theater. Glad I went to the early 7:15 showing yesterday.

What was the heavy populated planet that got wiped out? Was that Coruscant?

No, I think it was the capital of the New Republic. They mentioned briefly what it was later but I can't remember. it definitely wasn't coruscant though.

I agree about Ren's saber on the surface, but then you look at Rey... I thought it was pretty obvious that she didn't just nick him with the tip of the beam (phrasing!). I think Abrams is trying to change how the sabers work (for the record I would prefer this version because it would make for more interesting fights, and could also open up stories of more powerful Jedi being able to craft stronger light sabers that are like the ones we've seen in I-VI). That said, I think a change to the originals is a cheap tactic that shouldn't be done.
Work within the rules you were given, Abrams!

Wish Kylo would've kept his helmet on or at least picked it back up on the bridge. He was just so much more menacing with it on. Maybe he'll have one in ep8 since he has that huge scar now.

Exactly. They had to play it pretty safe to start the series back up and get everyone back on board after the disaster of the prequels

If you have ever read Joseph Campbell's thoughts on hero mythology, you'll realize that the parallels between A New Hope and A Force Awakens were inevitable.
What was annoying and not inevitable was the identical plots. Nice to see some references to the past, but felt like it cheapened the movie

Going to be interesting to see who bencio del Toro is playing in episode 8. Rumored to be a bad guy. Also looks like they are casting an older woman for a prominent role and also a younger woman roughly Rey's age. Hmmm.
I think the older woman may be Luke's wife and not sure about the younger...maybe a love interest of boyega?
I think 8 is going to reveal more about the Knights of Ren....maybe del Toro is one of them or another apprentice of snoke.

The Skywalker lineage is generally considered the most powerful force users in the Star Wars universe right?
They are both Skywalker lineage...

I've perused this thread but haven't noticed light saber discussion. Did anyone else think that Abrams changed how they work? Both the prequels and the originals characterized the light sabers as delicate instruments. In TFA Finn gets slashed across the back and doesn't split in two. Ren gets smacked in the face by Rey and he just has this burnt cut.
What gives?
Eh...I didn't really come away with this impression. If anything, the sabers appeared as deadly as ever. Watching Finn scream out in pain as one of the quillons from Kylo's saber charred his shoulder was pretty powerful.
That final blow from Kylo took of a large chunk out of his back as well and kept him from getting back up.
I would agree, however, that the final swing that Rey lands on Kylo seems like it should have done more damage. I would have to watch it again to properly assess how much damage it actually should have done - during that scene, though, I was just squirming in my seat in hope that they weren't about to kill off Kylo after one film.

Rey is Finn's love interest. I thought the movie made it pretty clear.

Why is Finn different from the other storm troopers raised up to be soldiers?
I think the point of all this is it was a huge frick-up to make the Storm Troopers all clones, so they made a main character a Storm Trooper. There were probably other Storm Troopers who had a problem with what they were doing, but they just carry out their jobs.
So are we going to find out later that Finn is the son of Lando Calrissian? And that is the reason he was a little different from the other Storm Troopers?

I think I need to see it again to give it a good review and really place it among the rest of the OT (there's no question it was better than the prequels), but I think I'd rank it ahead of Jedi after the first viewing (behind Empire and A New Hope). I thought Rey, Finn, and Poe were great. Maybe this was intentional, but I thought Kylo with his mask on was great. Once he took the mask off, I wasn't as impressed. However, that does a good job of giving the "pseudosith" I think Abrams was going for.
I would've liked to have seen some more backstory on what happened with Han and Leia instead of more bounties being placed on Han's head and being chased by weird tentacle like creatures. I didn't think that scene added much. However, maybe the reason they didn't go that route was because of Fisher...she wasn't very good in her screen moments other than her one line of "Luke is a jedi, you're his father."
I didn't have a problem with parallels to A New Hope like some do here. The death of Han and the ending with Luke, along with the great final battle in the snow with Finn/Rey and Kylo more than make up for that. The next movie has to knock it out of the park like Empire did. This was definitely a good start to the continuation of the Star Wars saga.

I kinda hope they are done with the His Son; His Father "reveals".
I get the Rey's family is sort of a mystery, but let's leave it at that, please.

I hope Poe gets more screen time he's very Han esque and I enjoyed him

HE will be a larger character going forward but likely not as big as the other ones. Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver will be the leads going forward with Boyega and Poe backing up. I think Luke takes a bigger role (10 minutes of screen time) in the next one and Leia stays about the same. Poe is an awesome character. just a badass

I was very disappointed in John Williams. In the prequels he had great themes like Duel of the Fates, Across the Stars, and Battle of the Heroes. Nothing stood out in this outside of the recycled themes.
My girlfriend, who works for the LSU School of Music, just lost her mind when I read this post to her.
She just rattled off about a dozen reasons why John Williams' score was great in this movie, and also used a lot of music terms I don't even understand.

It wasn't until she was backed against the collapsing chasm that she closes her eyes and "relaxes" while the sabers are at parry. After what seems 5-10 secs "feeling, channeling" the force, she comes out and defeats Ren.
This is crucial in answering how/why could Rey accelerate through stages in her force utilization? She was at peace and was not afraid of death. It is the same reason some Jedi transition to a force ghost. Using force is something caught more so than taught. She was actually in training for most of the movie. Several stages in her training were evident throughout. Also the force is not impersonal and lifeless, like gravity. So many of you speak of training and knowledge as if the force were not actually guiding and directing it's users. The force can be dormant and yet resurface millenniums later. That's all for now.
May the force be with you.

Just a couple of random thoughts. I loved the movie by the way. The original music score was a little disappointing but no big complaint. Why didn't J.J. have Captain Phasma fight Finn instead of the random storm trooper? It would have given that character a cool scene that she lacked. Also, I might have imagined this but I swear Luke's robotic hand looked different at the end than the robotic hand that touches R2 in the flashback?
