I think it's a good bet that the scenes you describe are a red herring to make us believe she's Luke's daughter.

quote:

Maz leading her to say Luke's name as to who she should seek out.

Of course she should seek Luke out. She's force sensitive, has zero training, and there's one Jedi left in the galaxy. Doesn't mean he's her father.

quote:

To Luke's reaction at the end. He visibly teared up to see it was her

Could be a reaction to seeing his long lost daughter, I acknowledge that. But it's also easily explained away by the things Han already laid out...Kylo killed Luke's padawans, Luke felt responsible for the way things were going with the First Order/Republic, etc., he went into exile because of it. He's obviously not in a good frame of mind.

I'll be a little upset if it's as simple as her being Luke's daughter with the way things have been laid out. And with Luke knowing that his own father having kids while being a Jedi directly caused all of the issues he went through in the OT, the backstory behind him having a kid better be pretty good.

Which is precisely why it is not Luke.

Maz's full statement is the only thing that leads me to agree.

Luke's reaction to seeing her was too emotional for him not to know her, and Han and Leia obviously knew who she was.

Luke was the only one who reacted like a parent would to seeing their adult child standing before them.
At least, between the big three.

Mayhaps her mother left her there.

Mayhaps she is a force produced Skywalker. Vader might have learned it from Palpatine. After all, Palpatine says Plagueis' apprentice knew everything Plagueis did.

Just Saw it (Jewish Christmas)

Overall i liked it. Lots of humor, and action. I want to see more, which is good.

MY mother literally cried when why killed Han. She still isn't over it, but I will admit i didn't want to watch 70 year old Han "run" around for 3 movies.

My 1 complaint, Rey beats Kylo Ren too early. I fully expect her to just kick his arse from here one once she has real training. In the end she was just like "oh yeah the force i heard of that before, i can do that" and kicked his arse. Thats not conflict. Thats boring. Hopefully Ren can win one back, or he wasn't 100% after Chewie shot him

My other gripe is that the Empire seems to solve all its problems by building a larger death star.

I don't think so. He wasn't teary eyed when he first saw her. It was when she pulled out his lightsaber that he gets teary eyed. She is practically begging him to take it and he is hesitating because of how the last time it played out.

Smartest thing they could have done. IMMEDIATE reconnection.

Now they will move on and, considering the quality of the new characters, they will move on very well.

I mean, he only lost it and an arm. It wasn't THAT traumatic. I think they gave him to time to recognize her. It was subtly done. He turns, sees her, takes him a second to recognize her, and boom, tears.

He still has the same lightsaber he did when Kylo betrayed him, presumably.

Maz's statement throws me off the scent though. Can't wait to find a version where I can get a detailed look at the flashback.

I completely got the "cool uncle" vibe from Han and Rey's interaction.

I expect the opposite - there's no way they'll have Rey beating down Kylo throughout the entire trilogy. Since we know Rey will likely prevail at the end, I think we will see Kylo get his revenge in Episode VIII.

Yeah, I feel sure he'll have Rey's lightsaber by the end of Episode VIII.

They spent several scenes pointing out how powerful Chewy's bowcaster is. Han used it to blow up two storm troopers and Kylo takes one to the gut and everyone expects him to shrug it off.

I'm almost certain she'll be Lukes daughter. They're not going to get rid of the Skywalker name.

The first thing I thought when they were introducing characters was this was going on a similar path of Jaina and Jacen Solo and I still do think that to an extent. Jaina and Jacen were twins of Han and Leia. Jaina was mechanically brilliant like Han and really strong in the force like Leia. Jacen was a force to recken with, captured during a war by an Overlord and tortured until cracking into the dark side to become a sith.

I think it will come out to be true that Rey is at least Ben's sister, most likely younger sister that showed extreme strength in the force at a very young age and had to be hidden away for the making of a better story.

My issue with that is how would Leia not know that's her daughter? I think its a bit of a stretch.

well to be fair, if Luke can create Reyson Bourne, he can do that to others as well. Now Kylo Ren and Snoke would be the issues, #doe

They could easily explain that she knew the whole time just needed to keep it quiet. Also, in the closing scenes there was some ambiguity and not really any lines where it could come out that she told Rey in private or something. I still think she's probably Luke's, though.

Many argue that reading spoilers takes away from the film. I would argue that knowing key plots actually improved my experience. Had I not known that Luke would barely be in the movie, I would have been preoccupied throughout the film wondering when he would show up. The opening crawl asks the question, “Where is Luke Skywalker?” To not have the answer to that question until literally the last 30 seconds was poor story-telling in my opinion.

After watching it last night for the first time, I unfortunately had a poor mindset going in because the whole movie I was thinking "Is this when Luke makes a badass appearance and saves the day?" So I wasn't being fair. With Luke not being in the marketing, I was expecting a great reveal. The ending was great and sets up the next movie perfectly....but damnit, I wanted more Luke Skywalker.

On that note, I wonder what Mark Hamil thought when first saw the script and saw that he had no lines.
