I do have a problem blaming JJ for this. He had that epic closing shot in mind, and it just got shite on. I’m sure he wrestled with it, but then just decided it would be best to save Luke for the sequel.

I remember an interview with JJ where he said they tried to write early versions of the script with Luke in it, but every draft they went through, Luke would end up taking over the story and they wanted to focus on introducing new characters. As a writer, you should be so lucky to have a character like Luke at your disposal that is so good and so fleshed out that you can't include him without the story becoming completely about him. They should have went with it instead of trying to fight it. Little did he know Rian Johnson would take a steaming dump on the character in the next one.

This should've been his intro.

Ryan Coogler did a fantastic in Creed job including Rocky but not letting him overshadow Creed. Maybe Rian Johnson just sucks

I think the Han Solo arc was really well done.

except for the tactless, brutal death scene. These are supposed to be kid movies in nature and that was no scene for kids.

WRONG

That's what is wrong with the franchise right now.

Star Wars was never intended as a kiddy movie. It was an old-fashioned High Adventure tale, like an Errol Flynn movie. Kids could watch because there was no sex or vulgarity, not because bad things couldn't happen to people.

Vader tortures people, including Leia. The Empire blows up the one planet that resembles Earth. Han and Luke kill a shite-ton of faceless bad guys in many exciting ways, all of which had us kids play-acting and daydreaming of doing the same.

Someone should've let George Lucas know that.

Damn, what a missed moment. Every audience would've lost their collective minds.

Lucas invented the whole 'Star Wars is for kids' crap as an excuse for Ewoks and Jar Jar, that narrative never existed until then.

Im still amazed at how Disney managed to piss off not only the fans, but even the freaking star of the franchise. Luke Skywalker may be the most if not one of the most recognizable names in all movie franchises. Even for folks who havent seen a single movie, they will know who Luke is.

Disney managed to completely ruin his character and then tick off the actor who portrays him. That is some next level stuff right there.

Actually, this doesn't surprise me a bit. Abrams has a history of setting up awesome plot hooks, mysteries, and hints of interwoven destinies and ancient threads of fate.

Then bailing on the story without leaving a clue on how all those threads tie together.

Look at Alias or Lost as exhibits A and B.

Incredible set up, world building, and mysterious questions.

No fricking answers and he's on to the next project.

Hamill has been quoted multiple times saying when he first read the script for TFA, he thought he was reading his intro scene and had to look twice when it said the lightsaber flies into Rey's hand.

Disney had no intention of him directing TLJ or IX. In fact he had drafted scripts for the entire trilogy that likely tied in very nicely with TFA but Johnson scrapper them and rewrote TLJ.

He does, but my post was about Abrams and TFA.

Bring Mark Hamill to the MCU Disney. Maybe that can rectify this somewhat.

Absolutely. I remember thinking that in the theater and was a little let down that it was Rey. Thought that it was just inevitable that they would have Luke show up like that.

Just blows my mind how they treated Luke. I get wanting to transition him out. I don't really agree with it but I get it. However, I think you could put together 5 random Star Wars fans and come up 100 better storylines for him than what we got.

Maybe Rian was going with the snarky comedy angle and was going to have CP3O turn to Luke as he walked by and say "What, you think you're better than me?"

An angry/assertive C3PO?

That would have subverted expectations so much that it's obvious that he never had that idea. There is no way Rian Johnson wouldn't have used it.

He was in it but for only like 5 seconds. I think they used Luke very well in TFA. The girl arriving on this island at the end and holding out Luke's lightsaber to give him.

Great cliffhanger for the next movie

I was fine with TFA and the scene/cliffhanger with Rey holding out the lightsaber to Luke was fricking awesome and had everyone leaving the theater pumped for Episode VIII. And then Episode VIII happened and was a complete and utter failure.

What was a worse? TLJ, Indy 4, or the Hobbit trilogy?

People blame JJ too much for Lost. He was a producer. He had very little involvement after season one. Damon and Carlton ran that show.

TLJ and it isn't close.
